Korean Women's Development Institute has conducted the Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women and Families, a nationwide panel survey, in order to find out the structures/changes of women's lives and their families since the year 2006. The first wave data collection and data cleaning are completed as of the year 2008. This survey was designed to establish a mega-database that can track changes in family values, family relationships, family processes/events, and family structures, as well as transition in economic activity through women's life cycle, not only in longitudinal but also in cross-sectional contexts. The survey will be used as the basic data for the policies for, child-care, work-family balance, family-friendly social environment, maternity promotion and related with low fertility & aging society. The survey targeted 10,000 females aged 19 ~ 64 in the 9,000 households chosen from a representative probability sample across the nation. Women aged between 19 and 64 (western age) were selected as the original sample for the survey. In case a female member in the household to which the original sample belongs reaches the age of 19, she is added to the original sample and traced in the subsequent waves. If there are any eligible members(women aged 19-64) in a new household which the original sample belongs by marriage, they are also included in the sample as long as they live with the original sample. Based on the first wave survey data, the Korean Women's Development Institute held a academic symposium and presented 33 papers on 11 themes, inviting many related researchers and academic associations(Korean Sociological Association, Korean Family Studies Association, the Population Association of Korea, the Korea Labor Economic Association, the Korean Association of Women's Studies, and the Korean Home Management Association). The institute also finalized the CAPI questionnaire for the 2nd wave survey after reviewing the first survey data and is conducting the 2nd wave field work from September to December, 2008. It has prepared and distributed information booklets such as <Women and Families Panel Brief> (twice a year) #3 and #4, and <KLoWF Research Reports>, the annual offical reports of KLoWF. It also has had field research team take all measures to minimize panel attrition in the second wave data collection. In 2008, the institute opened four Women and Families Panel Forums on the methods of panel data analysis in order to improve the understanding of longitudinal data analysis.
