        골형태형성단백질과 키토산 혼용이 골결손부 재생에 미치는 영향

        The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of combination of rhBMP-4 and chitosan, which have osteoinductive capacity, on the regeneration of bone defects in dogs. Three beagle dogs aged over one and half years and weighed about 15Kg were used in this study. Three round defects were made by trephine bur in each side of mandibles. Each defect was filled with collagen, chitosan, rhBMP-4/chitosan. The dogs were sacrificed at 1, 3 or 8 weeks postsurgery and the results were evaluated histologically. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The sign of new bone formation, rearrangement of osteoblasts was revealed adjacent of preexisted bone or around graft materials such as chitosan. 2. The descending order of groups in bone regeneration speed was the rhBMP-4/chitosan group, chitosan group, collagen group. In the combination group, new bone was regenerated more and in better quality than others. 3. The regeneration of bone was observed in the rhBMP-4/chitosan group in 3 weeks after surgery. In 8 weeks after surgery, bone regeneration was observed in all three groups, and new bone at 8th week was denser in the chitosan and rhBMP-4/chitosan group than collagen group. In conclusion, rhBMP-4 and chitosan can be applied in the bone regeneration procedures usefully. It is considered that chitosan can be a splint for the maintenance of the defect form and produce much better effect when used with good grafting material or bone morphogenetic protein.

        치매와 구강 건강의 관계

        According to the burst of aged people, researchers have focused on aging-related diseases. Cognitive impairment including Alzheimer's disease (AD), one of the representative diseases related to aging, has no treatment option until now. Recently, it has been revealed that systemic inflammation plays a fundamental role in the pathogenesis of AD. Previous studies have suggested the association between poor oral health and cognitive impairment. Poor oral health can cause dental caries, chronic periodontitis, multiple tooth loss, and poor chewing ability, etc. Especially, periodontitis is a well-known chronic inflammatory disease and affects cognitive impairment directly and indirectly by inflammatory products mediators. Therefore, reduction of pathogenic microbial burden and inflammatory products by treating periodontitis can be a therapeutic modality to prevent cognitive impairment or to slow down the progression of it. Future studies are necessary to elucidate the causal relations and plausible mechanisms between poor oral health and cognitive impairment.

        Nowadays laser gets attention again as a novel method in various treatment fields, such as oral surgery, endodontic and periodontal treatment, etc. Also biostimulation is an special area that we can`t pass over. Biostimulation means that low-level laser irradiation promotes the regeneration process in bone, soft tissue, and peri-implant tissue. Although the mechanism has not been elucidated, many reports have supported the biostimulation effect and it is generally accepted. In this feature article, researches up to now were reviewed to know the trends and future research focus.

        저출력 레이저 당뇨백서의 발치창 치유과정에 미치는 영향

        This study was performed to investigate the effect of low-energy laser irradiation on extraction socket healing in strptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. 24 male rats(about 12 weeks old) were divided into 4 groups : 1) Extraction and natural healing in normal rat for control group, 2) Extraction and low-energy irradiation therapy in normal rat for experimental group I, 3) Extraction and natural healing in streptozotocin-induced rat for experimental group II, 4) Extraction and low-energy irradiation therapy in streptozotocin-induced rat for experimental group III. The right and left maxillary 1st molars were extracted in all groups. For laser irradiation, we used Nd:YAG laser(50 mJ, 5 Hz) for 1 min(30 sec. irradiation, 30 sec. rest, 30 sec. irradiation) everyday. At 3, 5, 7, 14 days after extraction, rats were sacrificed and the specimens were compared with H&E stained slides. Experimental group I showed the fastest socket wound healing and the most new bone formation. Experimental group II showed the worst socket wound healing. Experimental group III did not show significant difference compared to control group. Laser irradiation groups showed less infiltration of inflammatory cell than normal healing groups. These results suggest that low-energy Nd:YAG laser irradiation could promote the extraction wound healing in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.
