Thomas Hardy : The Return on the Native를 中心으로 Chiefly on the "Return of the Native"
Vol.6 No.-
The Scarlet Letter와 The Power and The Glory의 유사성
Vol.25 No.-
In this essay, I tried to compare The scarlet letter with power and the Glory and find out the similarities between them. The similarities which I found out are as follows: 1. Two authors have the similar sense of sin. Hawthorne thinks human has two kinds of sin; one is an original sin, the other is an unpardonable sin. Greene calls such a sin an original sin and an acquired (learned) sin. 2. The leading characters of two novels are closely related with a sacrificial death. The death of the Whisky-priest has many in fluences on the subsidiary characters and we may call his death martyrdom. The death of Dimmesdale also has many influences on the other characters and his death brings many profound depths of remorse and confession to the reader. 3. The leading characters commit adultry and have the bastard daughter. Their daughters are the same premature child. 4. The leading characters are the clergy man. Dimmesdale is the minister and the Whisky-priest is the priest of Catholic Church. 5. The leading characters are the hunted man. Dimmesdale is hunted by Chillingworth, Hester's husband and the Whisky-priest is pursued by the Communist Lieutenant.
Vol.23 No.-
In this essay, I studied chiefly on The Power and the Glory and The Heart of the Matter among Greene's works. G. Greene is a religious writer and so he lays his emphasis on a grave religious doctrine throughout his works. To the eyes of Greene the world is full of sin and evil, nevertheless, these sins and evils are not a product of any social system. They penetrate deeply into human nature. I tried to show how characters live in the muddy world, how the attributes of soul are connected with each other and how they are related to theme. Furthermore I tried to treat whether or not his religious elements do harm to Greene as a novelist and whether or not his works 'problem novel'. In short, my main study on him is to treat the relation between his literature and Catholicism. In conclusion, despite of his religious dogma, his particular technique as a novelist-the power and economy of his descriptive writing, his laconic and swift moving style-leads him to the company of the great traditional novelists. Today his position as a writer belongs to the first rank of his contemporaries.
