A report of 11 unrecorded bacterial species in Korea isolated in 2017

Eleven bacterial strains 17SD2_15, 17Sr1_23, 17SD2_13, 17Sr1_31, 17gy_18, 16B15D, 16B02D, 16B04G, 16B01D, 17U4-2 and 17J28-10 assigned to the phylum Proteobacteria were isolated from soil samples collected from Seoul Women's University, in South Korea. The Belnapia species, strain 17SD2_15 was cocci-shaped and pink-colored. The Methylobacterium species, strain 17Sr1_23, 17SD2_13, 17Sr1_31, and 16B15D were short rod-shaped and pink-colored. The Microvirga species, strain 17gy_18, and 16B02D were short rod-shaped and pink-colored. The Oxalicibacterium species, strain 16B04G was short rod-shaped and pink-colored. The Sphingomonas species, strain 16B01D was short rod-shaped and yellow-colored. The Variovorax species, strain 17U4-2 was cocci-shaped and yellow-colored. The Paracoccus species, 17J28-10 was cocci-shaped and orange-colored. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strains 17SD2_15, 17Sr1_23, 17SD2_13, 17Sr1_31, 17gy_18, 16B15D, 16B02D, 16B04G, 16B01D, 17U4-2 and 17J28-10 were most closely related to Belnapia soli (with 99.9% similarity), Methylobacterium gregans (99.1%), Methylobacterium isbiliense (99.6%), Methylobacterium oxalidis (99.9%), Microvirga aerilata (98.7%), Methylobacterium aerolatum (99.0%), Microvirga vignae (100.0%), Noviherbaspirillum canariense (100.0%), Sphingomonas desiccabilis (100.0%), Variovorax humicola (99.6%), and Paracoccus acridae (99.1%), respectively. This is the first report of these eleven species in Korea.
Isolation of four unrecorded yeasts in the family Filobasidiaceae from soil in Korea

In 2020, 11 Basidiomycetous yeast strains were isolated from soil samples collected from the forests of Namhansanseong in Korea. Among them, seven species were reported, but four species were unreported in Korea. To identify wild yeasts, pairwise sequence comparisons of D1/D2 domain of the 26S rRNA were performed using Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST). The cell morphologies and assimilation test are observed by phase contrast microscope and API 20C AUX kit, respectively. The 11 strains were assigned to the genera Rhodotorula (4 strains) of the order Sporidiobolales of the class Microbotryomycetes; and Cryptococcus(2 strains), Goffeauzyma (1 strains), Naganishia (2 strains) of the order Filobasidiales and Saitozyma (2 strains) of the order Tremellales of the class Tremellomycetes in the phylum Basidiomycota. The unreported yeast strains Cryptococcus gastricus 20n5-2, Goffeauzyma gilvescens 20n2-7, Naganishia adeliensis 20n8-1, and Naganishia friedmannii 20n24-1 belong to the family Filobasidiaceae. All strains had oval shaped cells and cream-colored colonies cultured on on YM agar for 3 days. In this study, we focus on the description of four unreported yeast species in Korea.
A report of 28 unrecorded bacterial species, phylum Bacteroidetes, in Korea

In order to investigate indigenous prokaryotic species diversity in Korea, various environmental samples from diverse ecosystems were examined. Isolated bacterial strains were identified based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, and those exhibiting at least 98.7% sequence similarity with known bacterial species, but not reported in Korea, were selected as unrecorded species. 28 unrecorded bacterial species belonging to the phylum Bacteroidetes were discovered from various habitats including wastewater, freshwater, freshwater sediment, wet land, reclaimed land, plant root, bird feces, seawater, sea sand, tidal flat sediment, a scallop, marine algae, and seaweed. The unrecorded species were assigned to 18 different genera in five families: Flavobacterium, Epilithonimonas, Dokdonia, Gillisia, Flavicella, Chryseobacterium, Algibacter, Aquimarina, Lacinutrix, Gaetbulibacter, Cellulophaga, Tenacibaculum, and Maribacter of Flavobacteriaceae, Dyadobacter of Cytophagaceae, Draconibacterium of Draconibacterium_f, Sunxiuqinia of Prolixibacteraceae, and Fulvivirga of Fulvivirga_f. The selected isolates were subjected to further taxonomic characterization including analysis of Gram reaction, cellular and colonial morphology, biochemical activities, and phylogenetic trees. Descriptive information of the 28 unrecorded species is provided.

Two strains, YP344 and YP579 were isolated from soil samples in Pocheon City, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. The strains YP344 and YP579 belong to the genus Vishniacozyma and Dioszegia, respectively. The molecular phylogenetic analysis showed that the strain YP344 was closely related to Vishniacozyma peneaus. Strain YP344T differed by four nucleo- tide substitutions with no gap (0.70%) in the D1/D2 domain of the LSU rRNA gene and 16 nucleotide substitutions with 8 gaps (5.76%) in the ITS region. On the other hand, the strain YP579T varied from the type strain of the most closely related species, Dioszegia zsoltii var. zsoltii, by 6 nucleotide substitutions with four gaps (1.64%) in the D1/D2 domain of LSU rRNA gene and 26 nucleotide substitutions with 14 gaps (8.16%) in the ITS region. Therefore, the name Vishniacozyma terrae sp. nov. and Dioszegia terrae sp. nov. are pro- posed, with type strains YP344T (KCTC27988T)andYP579T (KCTC 27998T), respectively.
A report of six unrecorded radiation-resistant bacterial species isolated from soil in Korea in 2018

Six bacterial strains 18JY42-3, 18SH, 18JY76-11, 17J11-11, 18JY14-14, and 18JY15-11 assigned to the phylum Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria were isolated from soil samples in Korea. The Cohnella species, strain 18JY42-3 was Gram-stain-positive, short rod-shaped and beige-colored. The Methylobacterium species, strains 18SH and 18JY76-11 were Gram-stain-negative, short rod-shaped and pink-colored. The Microterricola species, strain 17J11-11 was Gram-stain-positive, short rod-shaped and yellow-colored. The Paenarthrobacter species, strains 18JY14-14 and 18JY15-11 were Gram-stain-positive, short rod-shaped and white-colored. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strains 18JY42-3, 18SH, 18JY76-11, 17J11-11, 18JY14-14, and 18JY15-11 were most closely related Cohnella rhizosphaerae (MH497628; 98.8%), Methylobacterium goesingense (MH497632; 99.1%), Methylobacterium populi (MH497635; 99.9%), Microterricolagilva (MH504108; 98.4%), Paenarthrobacter nicotinovorans (MH497641; 100%), and Paenarthrobacter nitroguajacolicus (MH497646; 99.2%), respectively. All the six unrecorded strains showed resistance to UV radiation. This is the first report of these six species in Korea.

Three strains, YP416<sup>T</sup>, YP421<sup>T</sup>, and Y422, were isolated from soil samples in Pocheon City, Gyeonggi province, South Korea. The strains belong to two novel yeast species in the genus Mrakia. Molecular phylogenetic analysis showed that the strain YP416<sup>T</sup> was closely related to Mrakia niccombsii. Still, it differed by 9 nucleotide substitutions with no gap (1.51%) in the D1/D2 domain of the LSU rRNA gene and 14 nucleotide substitutions with 7 gaps (2.36%) in the ITS region. The strain YP421<sup>T</sup> differed from the type strain of the most closely related species, Mrakia aquatica, by 5 nucleotide substitutions with no gap (0.81%) in the D1/D2 domain of the LSU rRNA gene and 9 nucleotide substitutions with one gap (1.43%) in the ITS region. The names Mrakia terrae sp. nov. and Mrakia soli sp. nov. are proposed, with type strains YP416<sup>T</sup> (KCTC 27886<sup>T</sup>) and YP421<sup>T</sup> (KCTC 27890<sup>T</sup>), respectively. MycoBank numbers of the strains YP416<sup>T</sup> and YP421<sup>T</sup> are MB 836844 and MB 836847, respectively.
