      • Clinical outcomes of patients with resectable pancreatic acinar cell carcinoma

        <P><B>OBJECTIVE</B></P><P>Given the rarity of the disease, the post‐resection clinical course of localized pancreatic acinar cell carcinoma (ACC) is largely unknown. Therefore, we aimed to analyze the outcomes of patients with localized pancreatic ACC who underwent curative surgical resection.</P><P><B>METHODS</B></P><P>We retrospectively analyzed the outcomes of 20 patients with resectable pancreatic ACC who underwent surgery.</P><P><B>RESULTS</B></P><P>Altogether 20 patients were included in the study, with a median age of 57 years and a male predominance. There were eight pure ACC, 10 mixed acinar–neuroendocrine carcinomas and two mixed acinar–ductal adenocarcinomas. Among the 15 patients who were staged histologically, 3, 8 and 4 were at stages IB, IIA and IIB, respectively. Eleven patients received adjuvant chemotherapy (5‐fluorouracil‐based [<I>n</I> = 9]; gemcitabine [<I>n</I> = 1]; etoposide plus cisplatin [<I>n</I> = 1]). In a median follow‐up period of 27.1 months, disease recurred in 10 patients, most commonly in the liver (90%). Median recurrence‐free survival and overall survival were 16.9 months and 75.0 months, respectively. Elevation of cancer antigen 19‐9 (CA19‐9), lymph node metastasis and neural invasion were significantly associated with poor overall survival (<I>P</I> = 0.007, <I>P</I> = 0.027 and <I>P</I> = 0.016, respectively).</P><P><B>CONCLUSIONS</B></P><P>Compared with ductal adenocarcinoma, resectable pancreatic ACC has a favorable prognosis after surgery. Considering that distant metastasis is the most common pattern of recurrence, further studies are necessary to define the role of adjuvant chemotherapy for improving survival outcomes.</P>

        HSP90 inhibitor, AUY922, debilitates intrinsic and acquired lapatinib-resistant HER2-positive gastric cancer cells

        Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) inhibitors, such as trastuzumab and lapatinib are used to treat HER2-positive breast and gastric cancers. However, as with other targeted therapies, intrinsic or acquired resistance to HER2 inhibitors presents unresolved therapeutic problems for HER2-positive gastric cancer. The present study describes investigations with AUY922, a heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) inhibitor, in primary lapatinib-resistant (ESO26 and OE33) and lapatinib-sensitive gastric cancer cells (OE19, N87, and SNU-216) harboring HER2 amplification/over-expression. In order to investigate whether AUY922 could overcome intrinsic and acquired resistance to HER2 inhibitors in HER2-positive gastric cancer, we generated lapatinib-resistant gastric cancer cell lines (OE19/LR and N87/LR) by continuous exposure to lapatinib in vitro. We found that activation of HER2 and protein kinase B (AKT) were key factors in inducing intrinsic and acquired lapatinib-resistant gastric cancer cell lines, and that AUY922 effectively suppressed activation of both HER2 and AKT in acquired lapatinib-resistant gastric cancer cell lines. In conclusion, AUY922 showed a synergistic anti-cancer effect with lapatinib and sensitized gastric cancer cells with intrinsic resistance to lapatinib. Dual inhibition of the HSP90 and HER2 signaling pathways could represent a potent therapeutic strategy to treat HER2-positive gastric cancer with intrinsic and acquired resistance to lapatinib.       • Effects of Leucocyanidines on Activities of Metabolizing Enzymes and Antioxidant Enzymes

        Procyanidolic oligomers (leucocyanidines, LCs) extracted from grape seeds (Vitis vinifera) are known to have antioxidant and antimutagenic activities, and a protective effect against cardiovascular disease. In the present study we examined the influence of LCs on the activities of phase I enzymes and conjugation enzymes and on antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase. Administration of LCs(25, 50, and 100mg/kg, p.o. for 7d) markedly decreased the activities of NADPH-cytochrome P450 reductase, P4501A1, P4501A2, and P453A4, but signiticuntly increased the activities of glutachione S-transferase and phenolsulfotranxferase in rat liver. However, the activities of antioxidant enzymes were not affected by LC administration. The inhibition of P450s and increases in phase II enzyme activities indicate a role for LCs as a chemopreventive agent against toxic or carcinogenic metabolites of P450 isozymes.

        Effect of herbal medicine (Jodeungsan) on migraine: A double-blind randomized clinical trial

        Background Migraine is a relatively common disease that has a significant effect on the daily activities of affected individuals. The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of herbal medicine (Jodeungsan, JDS) on migraine. Methods Sixty-four patients with migraine were recruited and randomized to either the JDS or placebo group at a 1:1 ratio. The subjects received JDS or placebo daily for four weeks. The primary outcome was a change in the number of headache attack days (HADs), and the secondary outcome measures were the headache impact test (HIT), migraine-specific quality of life (MSQoL), the deficiency and excess pattern identification questionnaire (DEPIQ), the cold and heat pattern identification questionnaire (CHPIQ), and the blood stasis pattern questionnaire (BSPQ). Results In all, 61 of the 64 patients took the investigational drugs for four weeks. The number of HADs did not significantly differ between the JDS and placebo groups at the end of the study. However, the HIT and MSQoL results showed significant improvement over the baseline in both groups. Conclusion JDS did not have a significant effect on chronic migraine.         저 전력 고 이득 주파수 상향변환기를 이용한 Zigbee 송신기 설계

        본 논문에서는 0.18 ㎛ CMOS 공정을 사용한 저 전력 고 이득 주파수 상향변환기를 이용하여 IEEE 802.15.4 규격을 만족하는 직접 변환 송신기를 제안 및 설계한다. 설계된 RF 직접 변환 송신기는 차동입력 디지털-아날로그 변환기, 수동저역통과 필터, 가변이득 증폭기, Quadrature 주파수 상향 변환기 그리고 차동 출력 구동증폭기로 구성되어 있다. 제안하는 직접변환 송신기에서 핵심적인 부분은 2.4 ㎓ Zigbee 규격을 저 전력으로 구동하는데 있다. 특히 Quadrature 주파수 상향변환기는 이득 Boosting을 통하여 적은 전류 소모로도 충분한 이득과 선형성을 보이고 있다. 측정결과, 공급전압 1.2 V에서 송신기의 총 소모 전류는 7.8 ㎃이고, 최대 출력 전력은 0 ㏈m 이상 그리고 —30 ㏈c의 ACPR(Adjacent Channel Power Ratio)을 나타내고 있다. This paper introduces a direct-conversion CMOS RF transmitter for the IEEE 802.15.4 standard with a low-power high-gain up-conversion mixer designed in 0.18 ㎛ process. The designed RF DCT(Direct Conversion Transmitter) is composed of differential DAC(Digital to Analog Converter), passive low-pass filter, quadrature active mixer and drive amplifier. The most important characteristic in designing RF DCT is to satisfy the 2.4 ㎓ Zigbee standard in low power. The quadrature active mixer inside the proposed RF DCT provides enough high gain as well as sufficient linearity using a gain boosting technique. The measurement results for the proposed transmitter show very low power consumption of 7.8 ㎃, output power more than 0 ㏈m and ACPR (Adjacent Channel Power Ratio) of —30 ㏈c.

        Computed tomographic features of the temporomandibular joint in 10 Jeju horses

        Background: The equine temporomandibular joint (TMJ) has a complex anatomical structure that makes diagnosis of TMJ disorders difficult. Computed tomography (CT) is now available in equine medicine; hence, TMJ evaluation has become more convenient. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to describe the CT features of the TMJ in Jeju horses and to compare these features with those of Thoroughbreds. Methods: In this report, the TMJs of 10 Jeju horses (mean age: 4.5 ± 1.9 yr; mean body weight: 282.6 ± 40.3 kg) and 6 Thoroughbreds (mean age: 7.3 ± 1.6 yr; mean body weight: 479.7 ± 44.0 kg) were examined using CT. After CT scanning, the Hounsfield units (HU) and height to width ratio (H:W) of the mandibular condyle were measured. Results: The mean H:W in Jeju horses was significantly lower than that in Thoroughbreds. The mean HU in Jeju horses was lower than that in Thoroughbreds; however, the difference was not significant. The most frequent CT finding was an irregular medial margin of the mandibular condyle in both breeds. Conclusions: In this study, the shape of the mandibular condyle in Jeju horses was flatter than that in Thoroughbreds. This report could be useful in evaluating the TMJ in Jeju horses. Moreover, CT could be a pragmatic choice for the examination of the TMJ in horses.

      • 래밍성형에 의한 세라믹 캔들 필터 제조공정 및 전망

        세라믹 필터는 여러 종류의 분진제거 시스템에서 연소 배가스 정제를 위한 가장 적절한 소재로 알려져 있다. 현재까지 다양한 형태의 세라믹 필터가 개발되고 있는데, 캔들 타입(candle type), 튜브 타입(tubular type), 평판 타입(parallel flow type) 등이 그 예이다. 통상적으로 세라믹 캔들 필터는 가압유동층복합발전(PFBC, Pressurize Fluidized-Bed Combustion), 석탄가스화복합발전(IGCC, Integrated coal Gasification Combined Cycle), 석탄가스화연료전지복합발전(IGFC, Integrated coal Gasification Fuel cell Combined cycle)에서 고온 배가스 정제용으로 사용되고 있다. 일반적으로 IGCC나 CTL 합성가스 정제시스템의 경우에는 높은 고압(약 25기압)과 미세분진이 함유되어 있는 분위기에서 운전된다. 그러므로 이때 사용되는 초청정용 세라믹 집진필터는 고온, 고압 및 부식 환경에서 50 MPa 이상을 갖는 높은 강도와 내식성을 갖도록 개발되어야 하기 때문에 SiC(Silicon Carbide)가 가장 적절한 캔들 필터 소재로 적용되고 있다. 이에 따라 집진용 SiC 세라믹 캔들 필터를 개발하기 위해서는 고온에서 내산화성이 우수하고, 부피팽창에 의한 균열이 발생하지 않는 무기결합재의 선정 및 이를 통한 소재의 특성 최적화가 가장 중요한 부분이라 할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 래밍성형 공정을 적용하여 1m급 탄화규소 세라믹 캔들 필터 시작품을 제조하였으며, 래밍성형 공정 이외에 정수압가압성형, 진공압출성형으로 제조되고 있는 세라믹 캔들 필터의 국내외 시장 및 그 전망을 분석하였다.
