Welding technology has been developed to improve welding quality. Especially, plasma arc welding has been used for a wide range of areas. However, welding defects occur because of inappropriate arc conditions and lack of arc control with metal vapor contamination in the arc column and anode root. The metal vapor contamination from the anode is varied by the electrical conductivity of the arc in high-temperature medium. The arc emits intense radiation. In this paper, the temperature distribution of the plasma arc contaminated with iron vapor from the anode under consideration of self-absorption was elucidated to develop the plasma arc welding technology and avoid the welding defect. Electromagnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation is used to calculate the temperature. Results show that the temperature distribution was varied under consideration of self-absorption because of the iron vapor distribution, and because ionized argon exists near the cathode.

In this paper, we develop an auto-detection method of non-isolated pulmonary nodules for computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) of lung cancers using X-ray CT images. An essential core of the method is to transform the non-isolated nodules connected to the walls of the chest into isolated ones that can be detected more easily by CAD systems developed previously. To this end, an active contour model is proposed to extract the lung area from the original CT image. The proposed model can solve the local optimum problem of the contour model by using anatomical features of the lung in X-ray CT slices. Some experimental results demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed method by using clinical CT images.

The goal of our work was to develop a treatment system for restoring proprioception in patients experiencing low back pain and those who experience falls. For this purpose, we investigated postural sway during local vibratory stimulation in elderly people in the standing position by using our newly developed variable frequency vibratory stimulation device and a gravicorder. Vibratory stimulations of 30, 60, 150, or 240 Hz were applied to the patients’ lumbar multifidus (LM) or gastrocnemius soleus muscles (GM). These frequencies were determined from eigen response frequencies for proprioception. The eigen response frequencies for the Meissner corpuscle, muscle spindle, and the Vater-Pacini corpuscles were 30, 60, and 240 Hz, respectively. The relative proprioceptive weighting ratios at 30 and 240 Hz were significantly different between elderly patients with and those without low back pain. On the other hand, the relative difference of center of pressure length of the LM at 30 Hz was significantly different between elderly patients with and those without a history of falls. Therefore, the Meissner and Vater-Pacini corpuscles may be deteriorated in patients with low back pain. The Meissner corpuscle in the lumbar region may be deteriorated in those who experience falls.
