Objective: Several studies suggest that a low cholesterol concentration is associated with a greater than normal risk of mortality from suicide. The authors sought to determine whether a low cholesterol level is associated with a history of serious suicide attempts among drug ingested ED patients. Method: serum cholesterol levels of attempted suicide of 89 patients, aged 20-72 years, were obtained from the ED admission biochemical profiles. Results: The seriousness of suicide attempt was associated with low serum cholesterol concentration in all age subgroups. Conclusions: Low cholesterol concentration should be futher investigated as a potential biological marker of suicide risk.

Twenty four male middle school and high school handball players were involved an adapted Plyometric Training program which was composed of depth jump and box jump, 3 days a week for B weeks. The jump ability factor before and after the training was analyzed, and the following conclusions were drawn 1. The group trained with higher box showed greater increase in their vertical jump ability than the group trained with lower box for both middle and high school players. 2. The group trained with higher box showed greater increase in their vertical running jump ability than the group trained with lower box for both Middle and high school players. 3. The group trained with higher box showed greater increase in the ability of staying in the air than the group trained with lower box for both middle and high school players. 4. The middle school players showed greater increase in the jump ability than the high school students.
증례 : 광방기에 의해 발생한 Chinese Herb Nephropathy 1예

본 증례의 환자는 근위부 신세뇨관 산증, 진행성 만성 신부전증, 세뇨관 위축 및 간질 섬유화 등 CHN에 잘 맞는 임상 증상 및 조직 소견을 보였고, 복용하던 한약재에서 AA가 검출되어 AA에 의한 CHN 또는 AAN으로 진단할 수 있었다. 이러한 환자의 신조직에서 AA-DNA adduct를 추가로 검출할 수 있다면 진단의 정확성을 더욱 높일 수 있을 것으로 보인다. Chinese herb nephropathy (CHN) is characterized by progressive tubulointerstitial nephritis and development of renal failure in a couple of years after diagnosis. Aristolochic acid (AA) is believed to be associated with the development of CHN. The authors report a case of CHN in which AA in the herb regimen was identified by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). A 32-year-old female presented with nausea, vomiting and generalized weakness. She had been taking Chinese herbs for symptomatic care. Clinical and laboratory examinations revealed Fanconi syndrome, renal failure, and severe anemia. Renal biopsy showed severe tubulointerstitial nephritis with moderate tubular atrophy and interstitial fibrosis. She developed end-stage renal failure 4 months after diagnosis. The herb she had been taking was Aristolochia fangchi. HPLC technique was used to identify AA and to measure its concentration in the herb. From the clinical and laboratory data, the patient was diagnosed with CHN caused by aristolochic acid.(Korean J Med 71:224-228, 2006)

Background and Objectives: Recent guideline recommends evaluation using of coronary flow reserve (CFR) and index of microcirculatory resistance (IMR) in patients with functionally insignificant stenosis. We evaluated clinical implications of CFR and IMR in patients with high fractional flow reserve (FFR) and deferred revascularization. Methods: A total of 867 patients (1,152 vessels) consigned to deferred revascularization who underwent comprehensive physiologic assessments were enrolled. Patients with high FFR (>0.80) were categorized by CFR (≤2) and IMR (≥23 U). Clinical outcome was assessed by patient-oriented composite outcome (POCO), a composite of any death, myocardial infarction (MI), and revascularization at 5 years. Results: Patients with low CFR (≤2) showed significantly greater risk of POCO than those with high CFR (>2) in both high-FFR (p=0.024) and low-FFR (p=0.034) groups. In patients with high FFR, those with low CFR and high IMR (overt microvascular disease) displayed the greatest risk of POCO overall (p=0.015), surpassing those with high CFR and low IMR (HR, 2.873; 95% CI, 1.476–5.594; p=0.002) and showing significantly greater risk of cardiac death or MI (HR, 5.662; 95% CI, 1.984–16.154; p=0.001). Overt microvascular disease was independently associated with POCO in the high-FFR population (HR, 2.282; 95% CI, 1.176–4.429; p=0.015). Conclusion: Among patients with deferred revascularization, those with low CFR showed significantly greater risk of POCO than those with high CFR, regardless of FFR. In patients with high FFR, those with overt microvascular disease showed significantly greater risk of POCO and cardiac death or MI at 5-year, compared with the others. Factors Affecting the Development of Diabetes Mellitus After Pancreatic Resection

OBJECTIVES: Glucose homeostasis changes after pancreatic resection are not well understood. We aimed to identify the incidence of, and risk factors for, a change in glucose homeostasis in patients who underwent pancreatectomy for benign pancreatic tumors. METHODS: Clinical and pathological data from 229 patients were collected prospectively and analyzed retrospectively. The pancreas resection volume was calculated by computed tomography volumetry. RESULTS: After pancreatectomy, newly diagnosed diabetes mellitus (DM) occurred in 52 patients (22.7%) and impaired fasting glucose and impaired glucose tolerance occurred in 74 patients (32.3%). The incidence of DM was highest for patients who underwent distal pancreatectomy (DP) (30.5%). Patients in the DP group had a significantly increased rate of DM as the pancreatic resection volume (in milliliters) and resected volume ratio (in percent) increased. A high body mass index and older age were significant risk factors for the development of DM by multivariate analysis. CONCLUSIONS: The resection volume of the pancreas is associated with a change in glucose homeostasis after pancreatectomy. Therefore, preservation of the pancreatic parenchyma is important to minimize the onset of DM in patients with a high pancreatic resected volume ratio (>35.6%) in DP, a high body mass index, or in old age.

<P>The effects of the pair-minerializer (CaSO4,-CaF2) on the burnability of clinker and the formation of mineral are investigated. As experimental results, the addition of F as pair-mineralizer, the burnability of clinker was improved. Especially, the addition of F and SO3 components simultaneously as pair-mineralizer, total amount of free lime in clinker is rapidly decreased compared with the value which mineralizer was added separately. In case of adding K2O only to the raw mixes, the amount of free lime is increased. However, if alkali (K2O) and pair-minerializer (CaSO4,-CaF2) were added simultaneously, the produced amount of clinker mineral is increased due to the formation of stable calcium langbeinite by the combination of alkali (K2O) and sulfate</P>

Mouse ficolin A is a plasma protein with lectin activity, and plays a role in host defense by binding carbohydrates, especially GlcNAc, on microorganisms. The ficolin A subunit consists of an N-terminal signal peptide, a collagen-like domain, and a C-terminal fibrinogen-like domain. In this study, we show that ficolin A can be synthesized and oligomerized in a cell and secreted into culture medium. We also identify a functionally relevant signal peptide of ficolin A by using MS/MS analysis to determine the N-terminal sequence of secreted ficolin A. When the signal peptide of mouse ficolin A was fused with enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP), EGFP was released into HEK 293 cell medium, suggesting that the signal peptide can efficiently direct ficolin A secretion. Moreover, our results suggest that the signal peptide of ficolin A has potential application for the production of useful secretory proteins.
