        Role of an unclassified Lachnospiraceae in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes: a longitudinal study of the urine microbiome and metabolites

        Recent investigations have revealed that the human microbiome plays an essential role in the occurrence of type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, despite the importance of understanding the involvement of the microbiota throughout the body in T2D, most studies have focused specifically on the intestinal microbiota. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have been recently found to provide important evidence regarding the mechanisms of T2D pathogenesis, as they act as key messengers between intestinal microorganisms and the host. Herein, we explored microorganisms potentially associated with T2D by tracking changes in microbiota-derived EVs from patient urine samples collected three times over four years. Mendelian randomization analysis was conducted to evaluate the causal relationships among microbial organisms, metabolites, and clinical measurements to provide a comprehensive view of how microbiota can influence T2D. We also analyzed EV-derived metagenomic (N = 393), clinical (N = 5032), genomic (N = 8842), and metabolite (N = 574) data from a prospective longitudinal Korean community-based cohort. Our data revealed that GU174097_g, an unclassified Lachnospiraceae, was associated with T2D (β = −189.13; p = 0.00006), and it was associated with the ketone bodies acetoacetate and 3-hydroxybutyrate (r = −0.0938 and −0.0829, respectively; p = 0.0022 and 0.0069, respectively). Furthermore, a causal relationship was identified between acetoacetate and HbA1c levels (β = 0.0002; p = 0.0154). GU174097_g reduced ketone body levels, thus decreasing HbA1c levels and the risk of T2D. Taken together, our findings indicate that GU174097_g may lower the risk of T2D by reducing ketone body levels.

        메타버스 이용자의 심리 특성 탐색 연구

        본 연구는 코로나-19 시대를 거치며 증가한 메타버스 공간에 관한 관심을 바탕으로 주된 이용층을 확인하고 이를 예측하는 변인을 탐색하고자 했다. 온라인 활동을 예측하기 위해서는 이용자 이용 목적과 동기 및 관련된 인구통계적 요인을 확인해야 하므로 이를 예측 변인으로 모형 분석을 진행했다. 2022년 한국미디어패널조사 데이터를 바탕으로 메타버스 이용자를 예측하는 Heckman 2단계 표본선택모형 분석을 수행했다. 분석 결과 1단계 선택모형에서 메타버스 이용을 결정하는 주된 요인으로는 오프라인 활동, 개방성, OTT 이용 여부, 그리고 유료 콘텐츠 구입 여부가 확인되었다. 또한 2단계 결과모형에서는 개방성, 성별, 유료 콘텐츠 구입 여부가 메타버스 이용 시간을 높이는 주된 변인으로 확인되었다. 이 연구 결과는 코로나-19 시대 온라인 활동 증가와 함께 메타버스 서비스에 관한 관심이 높아지고 있는 상황에서, 메타버스 이용자를 이해하고 예측하는 데 기여할 수 있을 것이다. 또한 메타버스 플랫폼 관련 기업과 개발자에게 유용한 정보를 제공할 수 있을 것이다. This study aims to identify the primary user group in the growing metaverse space based on the increased interest during the COVID-19 era. It also aims to explore the predictive factors for metaverse adoption. To predict online activities, the study examined user purposes, motivations, and relevant demographic factors as predictive variables through model analysis. The data from the Korean Media Panel Survey were used, and a two-stage analysis with the Heckman two-stage sample selection model was conducted to predict metaverse users. The analysis revealed that the key factors influencing metaverse adoption were offline activities, openness, OTT usage, and purchasing of paid content. Moreover, in the second stage model, openness, gender, and paid content purchases were identified as significant variables for increasing metaverse usage time. These results indicate that understanding metaverse users is essential in the context of the rising interest in online activities during the COVID-19 era and can provide valuable insights for metaverse platform-related companies and developers.

        Probing the speciation of quaternary ammonium polybromides by voltammetric tribromide titration

        <P>The speciation of quaternary ammonium polybromides (QBr2n+1) was quantitatively determined by voltammetric tribromide titration on a Pt ultramicroelectrode (UME). The concentration of Br3<SUP>−</SUP> in a QBr2n+1-water mixed solution (QBr2n+1-WMS) was electrochemically estimated by measuring the steady state current associated with the electro-reduction of Br3<SUP>−</SUP> in a linear sweep voltammogram (LSV). The <I>p</I>Br3<SUP>−</SUP> titration curves of QBr2n+1-WMSs show 2-4 plateaus, each of which relates to the formation of QBr2n+1 from Br3<SUP>−</SUP> and Br2. The values of <I>p</I>Br3<SUP>−</SUP> at these plateaus can be regarded as corrected equilibrium constants of QBr2n+1, <I>K</I>′eq(n), which is <I>K</I>eq(n)/<I>γ</I>±, where <I>γ</I>± is a mean activity coefficient in QBr2n+1-WMS. Based on the estimated <I>K</I>′eq(n), fractional diagrams of QBr2n+1 were obtained, which gave information on QBr2n+1 speciation.</P>

        Comparison of Labeling Items and Characteristics of OTC Drugs between South Korea, Japan and US

        연구배경 : 2012년 안전상비약의 약국 외 판매제도 도입 등으로 국내 소비자의 일반의약품에 대한 접근성, 구매 편의성이 중가하고 있으며, 의약품 포장 상의 표기정보는 약품 사용과 구매 시의 중요한 정보원으로 일반의약품의 오남용, 오사용의 원인이 될 수 있다. 이에 본 연구는 국내외 일반의약품의 정보표시항목과 표시특성에 대해 비교 분석하여 국내 일반의약품의 정보표시 개선방안을 제시하고자 한다. 연구방법 : 연구방법으로는 먼저 문헌연구를 통해 한국, 일본, 미국 일반의약품 정보표시규정들을 검토하고, 한국, 일본, 미국의 40종류의 일반의약품 사례연구를 통해 국가별 의약품 포장 상의 정보표시 항목과 표시빈도 등을 검토한다. 그리고 한국, 일본, 미국 정보표시항목과 표시특성에 대해 기초통계를 기반으로 비교 검토한다. 연구결과 : 한국, 일본, 미국의 일반의약품의 정보표시항목의 표기 빈도와 비중들을 검토한 결과, 일반의약품 표시항목으로 총 38개의 항목과 내용들이 검토되었으며, 한국 일반의약품의 실제 정보표시항목으로는 19개의 항목이, 일본 일반의약품의 정보표시항목으로는 25개의 항목이, 미국 일반의약품의 정보표시항목으로 29개의 항목이 검토되었으며, 국내 일반의약품 정보표시항목이 일본과 미국의 일반의약품에 비해 부족한 것으로 검토되었다. 그리고 정보표시특성 중 일본 의약품의 경우, 수량, 약의 종류, 일부성분, 첨가물, 제조일, 부작용피해연락처, 포장개봉방법, 포장용기보관, 포장용기리사이클 등의 항목이 한국의약품에 비해 더 표시되어 있는 것으로 검토되었고, 미국 일반의약품의 경우에는 소아용/노인용 표기, 일부성분, 안내문구, 부작용피해연락처, 독극물관리센터, 포장개봉방법 등의 안전사용 관련 항목들과 수량, 약의 종류, 실제크기, 제조일, 포장용기리사이클 등의 약품 관련 항목들이 더 표기되어 있는 것이 검토되었다. 결론 : 이상의 한국, 일본, 미국 일반의약품의 정보표시규정과 정보표시 항목 및 표시특성비교 연구결과, 일반의약품 정보표시 항목과 포장 상의 표시특성들이 비교 검토되었으며, 특히 국내 의약품의 경우 안전사용과 관련 정보항목과 구매 후의 의약품 사용, 관리, 보관 등에 관한 정보표시내용이 부족한 것으로 검토되어 향후 안전사용 관련 정보표시항목과 내용의 개선방안이 필요할 것으로 검토되었다. Background : Since a system allowing over-the-counter (OTC) drug sales outside pharmacies was introduced in 2012, consumers’ accessibility and convenience of purchasing OTC drugs are increasing, and thus abuse and misuse of OTC drugs are also increasing. In this regard, labeling information on the packaging of drugs can be used as an important source of information for drug use and purchase. This study aimed to compare and analyze the labeling items and characteristics of OTC drugs between South Korea and foreign countries. Methods : OTC labeling regulations in South Korea, Japan, and the US were reviewed through literature review, and country-specific labeling items and labeling frequency on the packaging of OTC drugs were examined through case studies of 40 kinds of OTC drugs in South Korea, Japan, and the US. In addition, basic statistics were used to review and compare labeling items and characteristics between South Korea, Japan, and the US. Result : Following a review of the labeling frequency and relative importance of OTC drugs in South Korea, Japan, and the US, a total of 38 OTC labeling items and contents were identified. In terms of actual labeling items, there were 19 labeling items for OTC drugs in South Korea, 25 labeling items for OTC drugs in Japan, and 29 labeling items for OTC drugs in the US, indicating that the number of labeling items for OTC drugs in South Korea was insufficient compared to those in Japan and the US. In terms of the labeling characteristics of OTC drugs, items such as quantity, drug type, some ingredients, additives, manufacturing date, contact information for adverse reactions, package opening method, packaging container storage, and packaging container recycling, were found to be additionally indicated on the labeling of OTC drugs in Japan, compared to that in South Korea. On the other hand, safety-related items, such as markings for use for children/elderly, some ingredients, notice, contact information for adverse reactions, poison control center, and packaging opening method, as well as drug-related items, such as quantity, drug type, actual size, manufacturing date, and packaging container recycling, were found to be additionally indicated on the OTC drug labeling in the US, compared to that in South Korea. Conclusion : We compared the labeling items and characteristics of OTC drugs in South Korea with those in foreign countries. In particular, compared to that in Japan and the US, the OTC drug labeling in South Korea lacked items related to safe use and contents about the use, management, and storage of OTC drugs after purchase.

        Rheological characterization of cellulose nanocrystal-laden self-healable polyvinyl alcohol hydrogels

        Among various nanomaterials, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are regarded as the most suitable reinforcing fi llers for hydrogels owing to their high dispersibility in water and favorable hydrogen bonding with water-dispersible polymers. Herein, CNC-laden polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/borax (P/CNC) hydrogels were prepared by solution mixing, and their mechanical and rheological properties were investigated in terms of CNC loading of 0–60 w/w%. PVA/borax hydrogels are known to exhibit self-healing ability based on the dynamic nature of the borate–diol complex, which is dependent on the rheological response because the rheological chain dynamics dominantly aff ect the self-healing process. In mechanical testing, the Young’s modulus of the P/CNC hydrogels sharply increased above 40 w/w% CNC, indicating that the stiff ening eff ect of CNC was enhanced above the critical loading. From a rheological perspective, the increases in the viscosity and storage modulus were further accelerated above 40 w/w%. In particular, the chain fl ow relaxation time ( τ f ), a quantitative parameter closely related to the self-healing performance, was observed for the P/CNC hydrogels with CNC amounts of 0−40 w/w% (1.6−97.3 s); whereas, there is no τ f for the P/CNC hydrogels with 45−60 w/w% CNC within a reasonable time scale we observed at 25 °C. Consequently, the incorporation of less than 40 w/w% CNCs aff ords high mechanical stiff ness while maintaining self-healing ability.
