Ternary nanocomposites based on ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA), maleic anhydride-grafted EVA (EVAgMA), and nanosilica were prepared in a Haake Rheomixer. The structure of the EVA/EVAgMA/silica nanocomposites was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy. The blending sequence was found to have a significant effect on the microstructure of EVA/EVAgMA/silica nanocomposites and the dispersion behavior of the nanosilica in the EVA matrix. The tensile properties (tensile strength and elongation at break), thermal behavior, crystalline structure and weatherability of the nanocomposites were also studied. The results showed that the above properties of the nanocomposites were enhanced remarkably using 1 wt% EVAgMA.
Development of a Piano-Playing Robot with Motion-Sound Mapping
Thai V. Hoang,박광현,Zeungnam Bien 동국대학교 정보융합기술원 2008 International Journal of Assistive Robotics and Sy Vol.9 No.3
This paper presents the developmentof a piano-playing robot with motion-sound mapping in order to provide the elderly a means of entertainment that can interact with them while it is in operation. A piano-playing robot composed of a personal computer, a robotic arm, and a robotic hand is first developed to make a system that can play piano mechanically. Kinematic, dynamic equations, and Jacobian matrix for the robotic arm and the robotic finger are then derived for realtime control and simulation of the system. A study on the actions underlying sound generation in acoustic piano is carried out to have an insight into the relations between piano sound and keys’ motion. These relations are later represented by neural networks. By using these relations, the pianoplaying robot can produce fascinating music as a result of mimicking sample music. Experiment results demonstrate that the developed system outperforms existing systems in the sense of music attractiveness and make it a candidate to be used as a service robot in entertaining human being.

This paper introduces a new solution to improve the performance for secondary systems in radio frequency (RF) powered cognitive radio networks (CRNs). In a conventional RF-powered CRN, the secondary system works based on the harvest-then-transmit protocol. That is, the secondary transmitter (ST) harvests energy from primary signals and then uses the harvested energy to transmit data to its secondary receiver (SR). However, with this protocol, the performance of the secondary system is much dependent on the amount of harvested energy as well as the primary channel activity, e.g., idle and busy periods. Recently, ambient backscatter communication has been introduced, which enables the ST to transmit data to the SR by backscattering ambient signals. Therefore, it is potential to be adopted in the RF-powered CRN. We investigate the performance of RF-powered CRNs with ambient backscatter communication over two scenarios, i.e., overlay and underlay CRNs. For each scenario, we formulate and solve the optimization problem to maximize the overall transmission rate of the secondary system. Numerical results show that by incorporating such two techniques, the performance of the secondary system can be improved significantly compared with the case when the ST performs either harvest-then-transmit or ambient backscatter technique.

Optimal Data Scheduling and Admission Control for Backscatter Sensor Networks
Hoang, Dinh Thai,Niyato, Dusit,Wang, Ping,Kim, Dong In,Bao Le, Long Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers 2017 IEEE Transactions on Communications Vol. No.

This paper studies the data scheduling and admission control problem for a backscatter sensor network (BSN). In the network, instead of initiating their own transmissions, the sensors can send their data to the gateway just by switching their antenna impedance and reflecting the received RF signals. As such, we can reduce remarkably the complexity, the power consumption, and the implementation cost of sensor nodes. Different sensors may have different functions, and data collected from each sensor may also have a different status, e.g., urgent or normal, and thus we need to take these factors into account. Therefore, in this paper, we first introduce a system model together with a mechanism in order to address the data collection and scheduling problem in the BSN. We then propose an optimization solution using the Markov decision process framework and a reinforcement learning algorithm based on the linear function approximation method, with the aim of finding the optimal data collection policy for the gateway. Through simulation results, we not only show the efficiency of the proposed solution compared with other baseline policies, but also present the analysis for data admission control policy under different classes of sensors as well as different types of data.

The ability of the total extract from Physalis angulata; three fractions after partitioning with n-hexane, ethyl acetate (TBE), and water; and four withanolides (compounds 1 – 4) to phosphorylate 5'-adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) in HepG2 cells was evaluated. The TBE fraction (50 μg/mL) activated p-ACC and p-AMPK expression most strongly. Compounds 1 – 4 (10 μM) upregulated p-ACC expression at different levels. Compound 4 induced the most significant changes in p-AMPK expression, followed by 1 and 2. Sterol regulatory element-binding proteins (SREBPs) play a functional role in the transcriptional regulation of the lipogenic pathway, including fatty acid synthase (FAS) and ACC. The effects of compounds 2 and 4 (10 μM) on FAS and SREBP-1c expression under high glucose conditions (30 mM) in HepG2 cells were evaluated further. Both dose-dependently inhibited FAS and SREBP-1c expression as well as lipid accumulation (1 – 10 μM) were compared to high-concentration glucose control, which upregulated FAS and SREBP-1c. These results suggest that compounds 2 and 4 upregulate AMPK, suppress FAS and SREBP-1c, and have potential effects on glucose and lipid metabolism.

A boom in e-commerce in Korea has sparked off high daily-volume demand for small-sized home delivery services, which poses a great challenge to distribution networks, especially in urban areas where traffic congestion, accessibility, and pollution are serious problems. In addition, security issues for people who live in small townhouses and detached houses without security systems and guards have received increasing attention from the government and society. Thus, the introduction of a new alternative for home delivery services, unmanned parcel lockers, is urgent for residents living in these areas. This paper examines and compares potential socio-economic impacts in terms of costs and benefits when such lockers are installed at selected locations in residential areas. The results show that this policy is worthy of adoption, with several undeniable benefits to local communities. In addition, sensitivity analyses estimate the economic performance of this project at different social discount rates, and they check the sensitivity of economic performance based on variations in the variables. The value of travel time savings was identified as a critical and dominating factor directly affecting economic performance.
