        A Bacteriological Assessment for Salmonella and Escherichia coli in Some Selected Fresh Water Prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) Farms and Depots

        Golda farms and depots of selected areas of the different districts of Bangladesh viz. Khulna, Bagerhat, Jessore and Norial area were sampled for the detection of Salmonella sp. and Escherichia coli. Incidence of Salmonella positive samples was 39%, 25%, 50% and 42% in the farms and 30%, 20%, 20% and 30% in the depots of Dumuria under Khulna, Bagerhat Sadar under Bagerhat, Avoynagar under Jessore and Kalia under Norail district respectively. On the other hand, E. coli positive samples was 23%, 42%, 25% and 17% in the farms and 70%, 30%, 50% and 30% in the depots of Dumuria (Khulna), Bagerhat Sadar (Bagerhat), Avoynagar (Jessore) and Kalia (Norail) region respectively. The overall results indicate that the trend of Samonella and E. coli contamination in farms and depots of all the regions is more or less similar although some variations were observed among the farms and depots of different location and region.

        Lung Perfusion Imaging and Tc^99m-Macroaggregated Human Serum Albumin

        Lung perfusion scanning, invariably combined with ventilation studies provides a reliable and non-invasive mean to diagnose lung related pathologies despite the availability of modem techniques such as angiography, magnetic resonance imaging, magnetic resonance angiography, and helical (spiral) computed tomography. The technique involves the generation of images by radiations emitted from radioisotopes introduced in to the lungs. Various radiopharmaceuticals have been proposed and designed to incorporate Tc^99m in to macroparticulate form for lung perfusion imaging. However, most of these have associated difficulties such as reproducibility of the product with regards to particle size distribution and poor elimination from the lung capillary bed. Tc^99m macroaggregated albumin (Tc^99m-MAA) is used extensively for clinical lung perfusion imaging and is considered as the radiopharmaceutical of choice. It is non-toxic, safe, and being biodegradable, is easily eliminated from the lung capillary bed by proteolytic enzyme metabolism and by mechanical forces due to lung movement.

        Experimental Pathogenesis of Pullorum Disease with the Local Isolate of Salmonella enterica serovar. enterica subspecies Pullorum in Pullets in Bangladesh

        The research work was carried out to study the pathogenesis covering the clinical signs, gross and histopathological lesions in different organs, and reisolation and identification of the organisms after experimental infection with the local isolate of Salmonella enterica serovar. enterica subspecies (S.) Pullorum at different time interval of the experiment during the period February 2006 to December 2006. One hundred pullets (seronegative to S. Pullorum of 12 weeks age were purchased and divided into 5 (A, B, C, D and E) groups and each group consisted of 20 birds. Four groups (A, B, C and D) were infected orally with a dose of 106 CFU, 107 CFU, 2 × 107 CFU, 108 CFU of S. Pullorum, respectively, and one group (E) was treated as uninfected control. The used methods were necropsy and histopathology, culture of bacteria, staining and biochemical test of Salmonella. Five birds from each group were randomly selected and sacrificed 1st week, 2nd, 3rd and 4th weeks of post infection (PI). From all the groups, the bacteriological samples (crop, liver, lung, heart, spleen, bile duodenum, ceca and blood) were collected with pre enriched in buffered peptone water in sterile poly bags. Liver, lungs, heart, spleen, intestine, etc. were collected in 10% buffered-formalin for histopathological examination. No clinical signs, gross and histopathological lesions were found in control group and no S. Pullorum was reisolated. Clinical sign of experimentally infected with S. Pullorum in pullets were loss of appetite (100%), slight depression (75%), ruffled feathers (85%), diarrhea (60%) and loss of weight (100%) in chickens. The feed intake and body weight at different weeks after PI differed significantly (p<0.01) among the groups. Grossly, the highest recorded lesion was button-like ulcer in the ceca (80%) and the lowest was white nodules in lungs (1.25%). S. Pullorum were reisolated from crop (91.25%), liver (91.25%), lung (83.75%), heart (71.25%), spleen (87.75%), bile (33.25%), duodenum (92.50%), ceca (97.50%) and from different group of infection (61.25%). The highest microscopic findings were intestinal and cecal mucosa and submucosa exhibited infiltration of mononuclear cells and congestion (96.25%), and the lowest finding was nodule formation in the lungs (3.75%). The pattern of the disease production by local isolate of S. Pullorum in Bangladesh is almost similar with other isolates in different countries.         이 실험은 추백리의 병원성을 연구하고자 2006년 2월부터 12월까지 Salmonella enterica serovar. enterica subspecies (S.) Pullorum 야외주를 분리한 후, 이를 건강한 닭에 실험적으로 감염시킨 다음 임상증상, 여러 기관의 육안 및 조직병리학적 검색과 아울러 공격주의 재분리와 동정을 시도하였다.       • Backstepping Sliding Mode Controller Design for a Flying Quadrotor

        This paper presents the design of a backstepping sliding mode controller for a quadrotor vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned air vehicle. This controller sets the quadrotor to fly to the desired three space positions (x, y, z) while controlling its yaw angle. In addition, the controller is designed to stabilize the pitch and roll angles. To ensure stability of the overall system, the backstepping controller is designed based on the Lyapunov stability theory. Various simulations of the model show that the control law stabilizes the quadrotor with good tracking. To verify the performance of the proposed backstepping controller, simulations using SIMULINK has been carried out. The simulation results show good performances.

        Aminated polyethersulfone-silver nanoparticles (AgNPs-APES) composite membranes with controlled silver ion release for antibacterial and water treatment applications

        <P>The present study reports the antibacterial disinfection properties of a series of silver nanoparticle (AgNP) immobilized membranes. Initially, polyethersulfone (PES) was functionalized through the introduction of amino groups to form aminated polyethersulfone (NH2-PES, APES). AgNPs were then coordinately immobilized on the surface of the APES composite membrane to form AgNPs-APES. The properties of the obtained membrane were examined by FT-IR, XPS, XRD, TGA, ICP-OES and SEM-EDAX analyses. These structural characterizations revealed that AgNPs ranging from 5 to 40 nm were immobilized on the surface of the polymer membrane. Antibacterial tests of the samples showed that the AgNPs-APES exhibited higher activity than the AgNPs-PES un-functionalized membrane. Generally, the AgNPs-APES 1 cm x 3 cm strip revealed a four times longer life than the un-functionalized AgNPs polymer membranes. The evaluation of the Ag+ leaching properties of the obtained samples indicated that approximately 30% of the AgNPs could be retained, even after 12 days of operation. Further analysis indicated that silver ion release can be sustained for approximately 25 days. The present study provides a systematic and novel approach to synthesize water treatment membranes with controlled and improved silver (Ag+) release to enhance the lifetime of the membranes.         Variation of Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity of Multiple-blended Binders Concretes Incorporating Thermally Activated Alum Sludge Ash

        In this paper the variation of Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) measurements with the compressive strength of multiple blended binders concretes at the age of 3, 7, 28, 56, and 90 days are evaluated. The binders consist of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), thermally Activated Alum Sludge Ash (AASA) obtained from the thermal activation of alum sludge in an electrical furnace until 800°C for 2 h, and the pozzolanic materials, such as Silica Fume (SF), Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS) and palm oil fuel ash (POFA), for binary and ternary blends of OPC. The water to binder ratio and total binder content are maintained at 0.3 and 493 kg/m3 for all mixes.The results indicate the relationship between compressive strength and UPV was an extremely positive exponential for multiple-blended binders concretes. A determination coefficient of correlation (R2) of 0.889, which that indicates the presence of good exponential correlation between UPV and compressive strength for all types of concrete mixes. However, constants were different for each pozzolanic material and each level of OPC in concrete.
