Vol.- No.15
Tasan`s writings on ritual can tell us much about his basic orientation, confirming that, though he was a remarkably original thinker, he stayed within the boundaries of Confucianism. He accepted the Confucian assumption that morality meant appropriate interactions within the human community. He agreed with other Confucians that the state should control ritual performance by its subjects. And, though Tasan believed in one Supreme God, his God was Sangje, the Confucian God. Further evidence for Tasan`s Confucian orientation can be found in his attitude toward burial and mourning ritual. He wrote hundreds of pages outlining his thoughts on the proper way to perform such rituals. Though he may have been influenced by Catholic books from China, in his heart he remained a Confucian.
TRANSLATING LIVES : MOVING BEYOND STATE-CENTERED TRANSLATIONS
2008 Acta Koreana Vol.11 No.1
Korean Studies in the English-speaking world has reached a significant turning point in this first decade of the twenty-first century. If we make the correct turn, it will continue to advance, promoting greater understanding of Korean history and culture in academia as well as a heightened recognition of the distinctiveness of Korean culture in the wider world. However, if we make the wrong turn, Korean Studies could stagnate and grow less, not more, productive. What is the right direction for Korean Studies in the English-speaking world? We have already made a lot of progress in providing material in translation to help our students and others gain access to Korea history and culture through the words of Koreans themselves. However, most of that material has been state-centered, focusing on politics and the cultural productions of the wealthy and well-educated governing elite. We need to move beyond state-centered documents and translate more material on daily life, especially the lives on the non-elite, to give those who can’t read that material in the original a better sense of what it was like to live in Korea a thousand, five hundred, or even just fifty years ago. In this article, I will make some specific suggestions for the type of material we should think about translating.
Taoism in Korea, Past and Present
Baker, Donald DAOS(The Daesoon Academy of Sciences) 2003 대순사상논총 Vol.16 No.-
Tasan’s Pragmatic Approach to the Confucian Classics
Vol.- No.22
The Philosophy of Tasan Chŏng Yagyong is still underappreciated in the Western world. A few academic articles, and even a couple of books, introducing his ideas have appeared in English. However, like most of the scholarship on Tasan published in Korean, Tasan’s philosophy is usually treated in those articles as an historical artifact, something to be viewed but not adopted. This is unfortunate, since Tasan offers much practical advice for dealing with problems that afflict human beings today. In particular, he offers a diagnosis of why we find it so difficult to live up to our own moral standards. He explains that we are torn by competing desires, a desire for the moral good and a desire for the good of physical pleasure, and have the freedom to choose one over the other. However, he also proposed a way to overcome our moral frailty so that we will choose to follow the more dif-ficult path of morality rather than the easier path of pleasure. He advocates a moral theology, grounded in the pragmatic assumption that human beings will try harder to behave appropriately if they believe their every thought and action is observed by the Lord on High.
