The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of green tea (Camellia sinensis) powders on fermentation and survival of probiotic yogurt. Green tea powders were added to milk, sterilized, fermented with Lactobacillus reuteri LYC184 and stored at 4°C for 14 days. The quality parameters of green tea powder yogurt (TP) included bacterial number, pH, titratable acidity, color and physicochemical properties were analyzed. Results showed that the adhesiveness and pH value decrease as the storage time increases; the value of titratable acidity, viscosity and hardness are proportional to the storage time. The phenolic compounds in green tea yogurts were analyzed by HPLC. The novel yogurts showed significantly higher probiotic cell viabilities during storage at 4°C. In conclusion, adding the green tea powders to Lactobacillus reuteri LYC184 fermented yogurt is an excellent functional food that has great potential for the beneficial properties of human health.
Numerical modelling of a shear-thickening fluid damper using optimal transit parameters

The viscosity of a shear-thickening fluid damper (STFD) can increase dramatically when the STFD undergoes highrate of excitation. Therefore, accurate numerical modelling of the STFD has been considered difficult due to this distinct feature. This study aims to develop a numerical model to accurately simulate the response of the STFD. First, a STFD is designed, fabricated, and installed in the laboratory. Then, performance tests are conducted in which sine waves with nine frequencies at three amplitude levels are adopted as the displacement excitations to the STFD. A novel numerical model which contains two parameter sets of the discrete Bouc-Wen model as well as two parameters for transiting the two parameter sets. Therefore, a total number of eighteen parameters need to be identified in the damper model. The symbiotic organisms search is applied to optimize the parameters. Numerical simulation results demonstrate that the proposed STFD model with transit parameter sets outperforms the conventional discrete Bouc-Wen model. The proposed STFD model can be applied to analyses of structures in which STFDs are installed in the future.

This study aimed to examine the antidiabetic effects of various concentrations of adlay bran oil (ABO) in high fat diet and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Dietary supplementation with 10% ABO for 4 weeks effectively decreased the blood triacylglycerol, glucose, and total cholesterol levels in diabetic rats, although body weight remained the same. The mRNA and protein expressions of hepatic glucose transporter 2 (GLUT-2) and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) were increased and that of glucokinase (GCK) were decreased in diabetic rats. However, 10% ABO treatment reduced the mRNA and protein expressions of GLUT-2 and PEPCK and elevated the expression of hepatic GCK in diabetic rats. Thus, ABO enhanced hepatic glucose metabolism to decrease blood glucose in diabetic rats. In addition, 10% ABO supplementation increased the expression of phosphorylated protein kinase B (Akt) relative to the total Akt levels in the muscles of diabetic rats, indicating enhanced insulin sensitivity. The results indicate that ABO displays a potential for improving hyperlipidemia and hyperglycemia in diabetes by enhancing insulin sensitivity and hepatic glucose metabolism.

Sprites, elves and blue jets are collectively denominated as the upper atmospheric transient luminous events (TLEs). They are recently discovered optical flashes between active thunderstorms and the ionosphere. In this report, a brief introduction to the most important characteristics of TLEs is given. Since 2001, scientists from the National Cheng Kung University have been performing yearly summer campaigns from various locations in Taiwan. The main achievements of their yearly campaign are presented.

The earliest stages of mammalian embryogenesis are governed by the activity of maternally inherited transcripts and proteins. Cytoplasmic polyadenylation of selected maternal mRNA has been reported to be a major control mechanism of delayed translation during preimplantation embryogenesis in mice. The presence of cis-elements required for cytoplasmic polyadenylation (e.g., CPE) can serve as a useful tag in the screening of maternal genes partaking in key functions in the transcriptionally dormant egg and early embryo. However, due to its relative simplicity, UA-rich sequences satisfying the canonical rule of known CPE consensus sequences are often found in the 3'-UTR of maternal transcripts that do not actually undergo cytoplasmic polyadenylation. In this study, we developed a method to confirm the validity of candidate CPE sequences in a given gene by a multiplex comparison of 3'-UTR sequences between mammalian homologs. We found that genes undergoing cytoplasmic polyadenylation tend to create a conserved block around the CPE, while CPE-like sequences in the 3'-UTR of genes lacking cytoplasmic polyadenylation do not exhibit such conservation between species. Through this cross-species comparison, we also identified an alternative CPE in the 3'-UTR of tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA), which is more likely to serve as a functional element. We suggest that verification of CPEs based on sequence conservation can provide a convenient tool for mass screening of factors governing the earliest processes of mammalian embryogenesis.
Strategy for Fabricating Wafer-Scale Platinum Disulfide

<P>PtS<SUB>2</SUB> is a newly developed group 10 2D layered material with high carrier mobility, wide band gap tunability, strongly bound excitons, symmetrical metallic and magnetic edge states, and ambient stability, making it attractive in nanoelectronic, optoelectronic, and spintronic fields. To the aim of application, a large-scale synthesis is necessary. For transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) compounds, a thermally assisted conversion method has been widely used to fabricate wafer-scale thin films. However, PtS<SUB>2</SUB> cannot be easily synthesized using the method, as the tetragonal PtS phase is more stable. Here, we use a specified quartz part to locally increase the vapor pressure of sulfur in a chemical vapor deposition furnace and successfully extend this method for the synthesis of PtS<SUB>2</SUB> thin films in a scalable and controllable manner. Moreover, the PtS and PtS<SUB>2</SUB> phases can be interchangeably converted through a proposed strategy. Field-effect transistor characterization and photocurrent measurements suggest that PtS<SUB>2</SUB> is an ambipolar semiconductor with a narrow band gap. Moreover, PtS<SUB>2</SUB> also shows excellent gas-sensing performance with a detection limit of ∼0.4 ppb for NO<SUB>2</SUB>. Our work presents a relatively simple way of synthesizing PtS<SUB>2</SUB> thin films and demonstrates their promise for high-performance ultrasensitive gas sensing, broadband optoelectronics, and nanoelectronics in a scalable manner. Furthermore, the proposed strategy is applicable for making other PtX<SUB>2</SUB> compounds and TMDs which are compatible with modern silicon technologies.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>
