        12C-induced Multifragmentation of Heavy-ion Reactions

Ahmed Osman 한국물리학회 2012 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.60 No.5

Multifragmentation of carbon-induced fission is considered following the statistical scission model. The fragment products in the exit channel are two different deformed nuclei, as well as some nucleons and / or alpha particles. The angular distributions and variances of this multifragmentation process, including two deformed heavy fragments, have been numerically calculated. The present calculations show the strong dependence of these values on the nuclear temperature. The present calculated differential cross-sections are in good agreements with the experimental data for an incident carbon energy of 84 A MeV.

Preoperative biliary drainage for pancreatic cancer

        Osman Ahmed,Jeffrey H. Lee 소화기인터벤션의학회 2018 Gastrointestinal Intervention Vol.7 No.2

Pancreatic cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality, but any meaningful improvement in its prognosis remains elusive. The lack of early diagnostic methods means that many patients only present when symptoms develop, such as obstructive jaundice. Once a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer has been made in a patient with obstructive jaundice, then a decision should be made if the patient is a candidate for surgical resection. Patients who are candidates for surgical resection generally do not need preoperative biliary drainage, unless they present with cholangitis, or if they require neo-adjuvant chemotherapy. If preoperative biliary drainage is to be done, then patient factors and local expertise should guide appropriate interventions. The evidence for endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography as a first-line therapy for biliary decompression is strong; However, the use of percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage as well as endoscopic ultrasound-guided biliary drainage has generally not been found to be inferior. Finally, to ensure ongoing patency and minimize complications, an appropriate self-expanding metal stent should ideally be placed.

The chloroform fraction of Citrus limon leaves inhibits human gastric cancer cell proliferation via induction of apoptosis

( Ahmed Osman ),( Jeong Yong Moon ),( Ho Bong Hyun ),( Hye Rim Kang ),( Somi Kim Cho ) 한국응용생명화학회 2016 Journal of Applied Biological Chemistry (J. Appl. Vol.59 No.3

Little information about the biological activities of Citrus limon (lemon) leaves has been reported, whereas the fruit of Citrus limon (lemon) has been well-documented to contain various pro-health bio-functional compounds. In the present study, the antiproliferative activities of the lemon leaves were evaluated using several cancer cell lines. From the n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and water fractions of methanolic extract of the leaves, the chloroform fraction of lemon leaves (CFLL) showed the most potent antiproliferative activity in the AGS human gastric cancer cells. The current study demonstrates that CFLL induces apoptosis in AGS cells, as evidenced by an increase in apoptotic bodies, cell population in the sub-G1 phase, Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, and cleavage of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), caspase-3 and caspase-9. Compositional analysis of the CFLL using gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) resulted in the identification of 27 compounds including trans, trans-farnesol (3.19 %), farnesol (3.26 %), vanillic acid (1.45 %), (-)-loliolide (5.24 %) and palmitic acid (6.96 %). Understanding the modes of action of these compounds individually and/or synergistically would provide useful information about their applications in cancer prevention and therapy.

Three-Nucleon Forces From Different Meson Exchanges

Ahmed Osman 한국물리학회 2012 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.61 No.1

Three-nucleon forces arising from heavy meson exchanges are considered. Three-nucleon force components following from the π − π, π − ρ, π − σ, and π − ω exchanges are included. Potentials due to the intermediate resonance are obtained considering the π meson-nucleon-nucleon vertex. The corresponding additions and subtractions of each exchange process to the bound state energy are numerically calculated. The net contribution of the present theoretical inclusion of the present three-nucleon forces is found to improve the binding energy of the trinucleon system by about 0.43 MeV.

Photoreactivity and Thermogravimetry of Copper(II) Complexes of N-Salicylideneaniline and Its Derivatives

Osman, Ahmed H.,Aly, Aref A.M.,El-Mottaleb, Mohamed Abd,Gouda, Gamal A.H. Korean Chemical Society 2004 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.25 No.1

$Cu^{II}$-complexes of N-salicylideneaniline and its derivatives were not light sensitive in most solvents such as acetonitrile. A photo-decomposition occurred upon irradiation in halocarbon solvents such as $CHCl_3$. It has been suggested that such photoreactivity is attributed to the reactivity of charge-transfer to solvent (CTTS) excited state attained upon irradiation. A mechanism has been proposed to account for the results obtained. The complexes have been thermally analysed in nitrogen and static air using thermogravimetry (TG) and derivative thermogravimetry (DTG). The thermal degradation of the complexes proceeds in two or three stages. The kinetic parameters obtained from the Coats-Redfern and Horowitz-Metzger equations show the kinetic compensation effect.

Geochemical, multi-isotopic studies and geothermal potential evaluation of the complex Djibouti volcanic aquifer (republic of Djibouti)

        Awaleh, Mohamed Osman,Boschetti, Tiziano,Soubaneh, Youssouf Djibril,Kim, Yongje,Baudron, Paul,Kawalieh, Ali Dirir,Ahmed, Moussa Mahdi,Daoud, Mohamed Ahmed,Dabar, Omar Assowe,Kadieh, Ibrahim Houssein,A Elsevier 2018 Applied geochemistry Vol.97 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The complex Djibouti volcanic aquifer system was studied to improve understanding of the recharge conditions of the Awrlofoul low-enthalpy geothermal system located in the middle of the aquifer. Forty-four thermal and non-thermal groundwater samples were analyzed to determine their major chemical compositions, trace element compositions, and multi-isotopic compositions (δ2H(H2O), δ18O(H2O), δ18O(SO4), δ34S(SO4), δ13C(DIC), 14C, 87Sr/86Sr, δ11B, δ15N(NO3 −), and δ18O(NO3 −)). Statistical analysis (Hierarchical Cluster Analysis and Principal Component Analysis) of chemical composition identified three main water groups, two affected by salinization (C1 and C2) and one fresh water group useful for drinking (C3). The latter group includes thermal water from the Awrlofoul geothermal field. This separation into three different water groups is also clear on a Langelier-Ludwig plot and is confirmed by analysis of historical chemical data over the last 30 years. The main causes of salinization are contamination of the fresh groundwater either by recent seawater intrusions (C2) or mixing with Ca-Cl fossil saline water (C1). The C1 waters are also highly affected by Mg/Ca-Na clay exchange. As expected, the 11B/10B isotope ratio of the intruded salt water, both recent and fossil, was much higher than that of seawater (δ11B up to +55‰). Unexpectedly, groundwater of meteoric origin (i.e., unaffected by a seawater intrusion), also showed a δ11B higher than that of seawater (46.3‰ < δ11B < 51.3‰). That the unexpectedly high δ11B values are likely due to 10B sequestration resulting from interaction with clay and/or carbonate precipitation is demonstrated by activity diagrams and saturation indices. The C1 water group is also affected by nitrate contamination (56.8 ± 19.2 mg/l). That the nitrate contamination is likely due to manure contamination is indicated by comparing the dual isotopic composition of nitrate to the boron isotope ratios. The isotopic composition of sulfate highlighted the importance of SO2-disproportionation to the local sulfate minerals that interacted with the meteoric recharge, while the strontium isotope ratios showed the importance of the seawater-basalt interaction with the fossil saline water component. The results of the mixing analysis using chemical composition, δ13C(DIC), and 14C data by geochemical software (NetpathXL) confirmed the presence of ternary mixing with at least three sources (seawater, meteoric, and fossil) in the waters with the highest chloride concentrations. The estimation of groundwater age by 14C was complicated by overexploitation (as testified by the lumped parameters approach). However, the fossil saline water component was dated back to the Holocene Humid Period.</P> <P>To estimate the temperature of the Awrlofoul low-enthalpy geothermal system, a multi-method geothermometric approach was applied. Chemical (mainly SiO2) and isotope (sulfate-water oxygen fractionation) geothermometers were employed together with multiple mineral equilibria. These different geothermometric approaches estimated a temperature range of 102 °C–140 °C for the geothermal reservoir, with a mean temperature of about 110 °C.</P> <P>Finally, a conceptual model was proposed for the Awrlofoul low-enthalpy geothermal system on the basis of the geochemical and isotopic data of the thermal and non-thermal groundwaters combined with the geology and hydrogeology of the study area.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI>
