Since the advent of modern times, media have taken center stage in the life of the general public, and TV has been at the center of media activities. A television set takes the most prominent place in the living room of each household and spreads new ideologies and purchase desires to the public, crossing the boundary between virtual and real worlds. As Anders said, people living in the “worlds as phantom and as matrix” accumulate experiences that they encounter through incidents staged within the walls built by capital and power and communicate with others on the basis of such experiences. After all, TV is the most familiar object in the lives of modern people and its influence as an ongoing mediator of their daily lives is constantly increasing.
Among TV programs, a clear winner in the competition for the central place is entertainment programs, such as celebrity-driven varieties or lifestyle-related reality shows. Entertainment programs play their roles as entertainment sources more palpably than fictions. While dramas play their own role as entertainment sources, real variety programs have specific appeals conveyed not only in instantaneous comical or touching scenes to laugh and cry with, but also in their own particular sincerities and messages. Real variety programs use a wide variety of daily materials as their topics, thereby melting them into multi-layered daily lives of people by attempting non-genre or hybrid genre to the effect of staging real situations in which the boundary between show and reality is strategically blurred. This paper is intended to address this phenomenon of TV entertainment programs, focusing on real variety programs, in order to elucidate the reasons for their appeal to modern people and show the process through which they came to occupy the leading position in modern popular culture. Moreover, a more objective analysis was attempted on weekend real variety show programs by applying the program engagement index (PEI) and content power index (CPI) as the basic and supplementary indicators, respectively, for assessing the impact of a program on its audience.

Chapter 3 examines TV as a forum for ‘show’ intended to replace people’s daily lives and ‘showing’ intended to display it. TV reconstructs the memory of the recipients and arranges the communication between the celebrities appearing on the show and the general public by exposing their private spaces to a public view. Furthermore, by using people’s daily lives as materials for real variety shows, they bring the episodes taking place in everyday life into the arena provided by TV. This creates fictionalization of reality and realization of fiction, which epitomizes the very essence of TV.
“Real Men” presented the role of TV as a virtual playground of reliving the life during the military service by replacing past memories with the recollection of real experiences. While the reality effect of a real variety program was maximized by overlapping the public military space onto the private playground of recollection, it showed the essentially virtual nature of a TV real variety show program that presupposes the reality imitation by manipulating the past spaces as visual images really present in current settings.
Character creation is another feature of TV entertainment programs. Private lives of casted figures are used as program materials and their characters are created within the program, thus creating intimacy with the public. While each program depicts different dimensions of typical human groups through their characters, such characters can ultimately serve as cues in grasping the distinct features and narrative structure (storytelling) of the given program. However, by the very nature of a program that imitates reality, its most important aspect is the real appearance of the character in everyday situations. Therefore, a program production team always tries to grasp the routines of a character’s life and replicate it as realistically as possible in order to convince the public of the sincerity of the program. It is through this progress that real variety show programs have been increasingly in demand, gaining sympathy of the public.
A show is the sum total of a spectacle, which is created by movements. Consequently, modern real variety shows prefer dynamic outdoor environments to static studio setups for shooting to ensure spectacular effects, and their preferred storytelling is a discourse depicted by the flow of physical movements. During the process of chaining such narrative events, there are scenes in which celebrities and audiences perform missions together. Such scenes are intended by the production team to make the reality palpable to the public, thus enhancing the sincerity of the program as a real variety show. Participating public are given the opportunities of directly feeling the reality as a means of subverting and deviating from habitual patterns. By playing this role of an arena of interaction between celebrities and their audiences , TV fulfils its mission as a space for producing capitalist values and disseminating ideologies.
In the process of determining the role of fantasy in real variety shows, this paper posits that a fantasy does not disguise reality, but reality itself is fantasy. The public, wishing to replace their fears for real accidents in life with fantasized experiences, opt for the TV-specific visual messages that persuade them into believing that the tension generated by the word “real” is fantasy. The public forget the bitterness of reality while watching real variety show programs as dramatic entertainment and immerse into a world (arena) of fantasy.
Chapter 4 presents real variety show TV programs as a new means of leisure and divides their distinctive features into three categories of historicity, currency, and sociality. Each of these categories is described along with its impact on present-day real variety show programs.
First, it is investigated how the new genre called real variety show came into being and changed over time as well as the process that led to its birth. Entertainment programs in the early years of Korean TV drew on the jokes or sketches of early modern wandering theaters. TV as a media platform specialized in entertainment could consolidate its prominent position through mass production and distribution of television sets along with economic development. Comedies and variety shows, which have their origin in jokes and sketches as their primary contents, have evolved to the present forms and contents in progressive successions from generation to generation. Particular attention is devoted to the history and marketing strategies of “Infinite Challenge,” which started from the format of an imported foreign reality program and succeeded in showing the horizon of Korean-style real variety shows.
Second, the significance of entertainment is attributed to the maximization of fantasy playing against probability as a guarantee for reality of a real variety show that establishes links to people’s daily lives. Also discussed is the comic effect of seeing the reactions of characters when coping with penalties they have to take for violating the rules, even though such rules are flexible and arbitrary. It is also hypothesized that the raison d’être of a real variety show program is the taciturn agreement among the production team, cast, and public about the basic premise that the program presents daily lives processed as real events in a show format.
In relation to the social role of TV entertainment programs, the reasons for the current popularity of real variety shows among the public are given under the application of concrete indicators. Also explained are the role and position of common folk playing in celebrity-driven programs on the basis of the theory of parasocial interaction. Although celebrities and common folk compete on an equal footing and sometimes form intimacy as artificial components, a real variety show program is in essence results of virtual experiences, which also applied to the combination of celebrities and non-celebrities.
Chapter 5 describes the aesthetic devices employed by real variety show programs. As of the last week of August 2014, the total number of entertainment programs broadcast on four channels of the three terrestrial broadcasters is 64. Since the incoherent and arbitrary classification of the broadcasters themselves is not of much help for an entertainment program study in terms of basic genre classification, the aesthetic devices applied to weekend real variety show programs of three terrestrial broadcasters are analyzed on the basis of a concrete program rating and its supplementary index.
First, real variety programs of the format broken away and evolved from conventional entertainment program with a distinctive storytelling strategy are examined. Such programs are considered to play the role of easing people of everyday worries with the fragmental daily-life prism at the boundary of fantasy and reality under the banner of natural composition transcending genre and format. Furthermore, by creating a virtually realized character of a character reflecting a modern social reality and broadcasting the resulting conversations without editing them, the effect of arousing the sympathy of the public can be achieved. In addition, an open-end format perceivable by anybody provides the possibility of real-life public experience going beyond the confine of private games, which gives people opportunities to concretize their own cases and show more interest, thus establishing its raison d’être as a mechanism of generating laughter and comfort, which are the gist of a real variety show program.
Finally, reversal-induced unexpected results is verified to be a mechanism that enriches real variety show programs. The ups and downs of emotions plotted within a program keep attracting audience’s interest, which contributes to enhancing the positive images of not only the program itself, but also those of the celebrities playing in it. Additionally, Anders’ concept of “broadcast event” is employed to explain the emotion of the public that perceive this reversal and surprise effect as dramatic elements in the sense of Aristotle’s reversal and recognition. These reactions of the public come from the desire to dilute daily worries and fears in the extremely exaggerated expression and hence do not take account of the pains and risks confronted by the cast that act in real settings, albeit artificial. In such moments, the public perceive TV as a space where virtual events take place, not real events.
“Roommates” with events revolving around a virtual family and “I Live Alone” showing tricks for living alone are examined to show the patterns of real variety shows that present the importance of family and a new form of family. The current landscape of real variety show programs is dominated by programs focusing on families or images of family. For example, “Superman is Back” and “Daddy, where are you going?” have parenting as the main theme, and “Real Men” shows that the hierarchy-centered address forms in the army changes to inter-sibling address forms expressing the age relations among siblings expanded to general relations (tr. note: Koreans refer to their siblings with nouns denoting their genders and relative ages, such as elder brother and younger sister).
Furthermore, strategies of real variety shows that present everyday life while changing places every time are examined. Analyses are also performed on the fixed and flexible aspects of the stories using routine materials. A program can take the story that happens in unexpected moments as its basic story, which can also support the main pillar of the preset guidelines.
Cast members show a wide variety of interactions and communications depending on mutual relationship configuration, such as tension and conflict, intrigue and betrayal, or reconciliation and cooperation. They come out of the usual star images and try to establish friendly relationships like real friends. Celebrities and common folk called on to participate in the show make efforts to share emotions through virtual role-plays. Mention is also made, however, of the effect of capital and power hidden behind the competition with forced equality and unconditional acceptance of defeat, as if to show that the process of common folk’s participation and their own narrative building and acting actually takes place according to the plan and staging of the production team.
This point allows us to guess that the aforementioned taciturn agreement among the production team, cast, and public is not solid and can be broken anytime. Such a susceptible bond can be interpreted as representing the incomplete bond between the fantasy and reality of the virtual and real events presented on the TV screen.
Finally, Chapter 6 discusses the implications of entertainment programs. First, it is observed that the public have two contrary views of entertainment programs that lead the popular culture. While TV entertainment programs provide fun and relaxation demanded by the public demands, they are always objects of vigilance and guard from the social perspective. It is because despite their role as the most popular media genre, the potential for reverse effect may be great when the popularity is associated with sensationalism and violence.
After all, it is a generally acknowledged fact that TV itself is not a medium representing noble and high arts. This can be ascribed to age-old view of belittling the value of laughter while taking the social rigidity of differentiating high arts and popular arts seriously. However, the raison d’être of TV entertainment programs as a genre that implements the desire and fantasy of the public should be recognized at their right value. In fact, they help the public living today’s world of alienation to forget, albeit temporarily, their lonesome everyday lives and live a world of fantasy, and such mental deviation should be recognized and its attempts at subverting the routines through images transcending them should be encouraged.
The biggest reason that the public laugh watching TV entertainment programs is the pleasure coming from witnessing the reversals and the subsequent overthrows and violations, and such reversals are ultimately the mightiest weapon to disarm the hypocrisy of the ruling class. As such, TV entertainment programs should provide the foundation for the expression of such behaviors of the public.

As described above, this paper was intended to understand the distinctive features of entertainment programs in terms of formats and open-ended viewpoints and defines the storytelling of individual programs and the character model advancing the storytelling as expressions transcending the routines. In addition, subtitles and other related materials were interpreted as tools strengthening the essential characteristics of the given program. Based on these microscopic analyses, the implications of entertainment programs as popular culture were discussed by investigating the social environment in which TV entertainment programs are produced, circulated, and consumed as well as by establishing objective indicators related to their acceptance.
TV entertainment programs, especially those evolved into Korean-style shows, have been involved in establishing the relationships among the public, everyday life, and real variety shows by means of storytelling elements and popular cultural implications. Moreover, by inputting family, game, analog, phantom, and matrix as keywords, the current landscape of modern TV entertainment programs was diagnosed using the inter-keyword differences and contextualization. While it is true that this paper is based on subjective observations and arguments and thus lacks objectivity, its significance lies in the fact that it established the relationships among the production team, cast, and the public and thus brought TV entertainment programs into new context and that efforts were made to find the epitome of the popular culture really desired by modern people in TV entertainment programs.
It is hoped that this paper will serve as basis for further research that can point the direction of discourse formation as popular culture to TV entertainment programs that have been used as sub-culture and consumer goods.
