성별, 연령 및 담화 상황에 따른 시간 벌기 담화표지 ‘어’와 ‘음’의 사용 차이 = Time-gaining Discourse Markers ‘uh’ and ‘um’ by difference of gender, age and discourse situation

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study used spoken language data to investigate whether differences in the use of the Korean discourse markers ‘uh’ and ‘um’, which function as time-gain, appear due to sociolinguistic variables of gender, age and discourse situation.
As a result of analyzing the frequency of ‘uh’ and ‘um’, the frequency of ‘uh’ was found to be higher than that of ‘um’. The usage patterns of ‘uh’ and ‘um’ according to gender were similar. The difference in the use of ‘uh’ and ‘um’ by age was that in each discourse, speakers with the highest age used more ‘uh’ and less ‘um’ than speakers with lower ages. However, because the difference was not large, there was no significant. The use of ‘uh’ and ‘um’ showed significant differences depending on the discourse situations. Although ‘uh’ was used more than ‘um’ in both discourse situations, the difference between the use of ‘uh’ and ‘um’ was greater in public discourse. Additionally, the difference in the use of ‘uh’ and ‘um’ was more noticeable in TV debates than in lectures in public discourse.
