The purpose of this study was to examine the characteristics of bride's motions appeared in Bronislava Nijinska's original work 'Les Noces' and the greatest choreographer of the time, Jiri Kylian's work 'Les Noces' based on the time-oriented changes and such four categories as body, effort, shape and space, focusing on Laban's theories―the foundation of motion studies. This study was initiated with the investigator's recognition of necessity of choreographically approaching studies on dance.
For this, three highlighting scenes of bride's motion were selected. The investigator of ballet major and LMA (Laban Movement Analysis) course graduate carried out primary analysis. And the second analysis was carried out by Kim Jae-ri who had the certificate of LMA, based on the study findings of primary analysis, and then applied it to the investigator's analysis. Study findings are as follows:
First, the characteristic of bride's motion presented in 'the house of bride' in Nijinska's work was that she moved her body parts articulately and used the motion repeatedly. The motion at that time highlighted the sense of anxiety for the unexpected future. The bride's motion in Kylian's work used contradictory motions repeatedly, thus highly elating atmosphere. In addition, her suddenly stopped motions created a tense mood, thus emphasizing and maximizing bride's expression. Via these motions, the tension and anxiety of bride, felt before marriage, seemed to be expressed effectively.
Second, in 'the departure of bride', Nijinska implicitly provided social customs and the frames of tradition to bride's images, thus presenting an ideal image of women, which was accepted by community, as well as bride's expectation and thrill for marriage. Jiri Kylian emphasized bride's internal expression and anxiety about leaving home. On the other hand, he expressively presented the sense of expectation for the things occurring in the future. At this time, focus was not on bridegroom's motion but on bride's.
Third, in 'the wedding reception', Nijinska provided simple uniformity to bride's motion and made it concise, thus emphasizing abstractiveness. However, Jiri Kylian emphasized the beauty of curves and presented the character of extroverted motions by means of controlling an internalized central flow, in order to create the tension of motions.
Bride's feminine images, presented in Nijinska's work of 'Les Noces', expressed her internal world not by heroine herself but by other characters. In the course of development of drama, the role of a bride was presented passively. On the other hand, bride's feminine images, presented in Kylian's work of 'Les Noces', led the whole work and showed a subjective and active image of bride.
In this study, the investigator tried to clarify these consistent contents objectively using the analytic frame of LMA. Therefore, comparing to preceding studies, this study seemed to be more precise in the presentation of bride's motions.
This study's analytic subject was only bride's motions, However, if the analytic subject in 'Les Noces' by Bronislava Nijinska and Jiri Kylian is extended to overall aspects, such as bridegroom, parents and group dance, it will be a more meaningful study. The investigator hopes study findings become a base of interpreting choreography and works in the area of dance, thus providing help to dancer's realization of accurate performance and improvement of expressions and to the expression of feminine images of new formation that satisfying the changes of time.
