영유아기 자녀를 둔 엄마대학원생의 학업·양육 병행 경험 및 양육지원에 대한 요구 : 유아교육 전공자를 대상으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 일반대학원 박사과정에 재학 중인 유아교육전공자 중 유아기 자녀가 있는 엄마대학원생들의 학업과 자녀양육 병행에 대한 경험을 심층적으로 살펴봄으로써 이를 바탕으로 영유아기 자녀가 있는 기혼 여성 대학원생이 국가·사회적으로 요구하는 바를 인지하며, 적절한 양육지원제도의 도출과 함께 기혼 여성 대학원생의 취업 및 준비과정 등 여건에 따른 맞춤형 양육지원 정책 마련을 위한 기초자료를 제공하는데 목적이 있다.

본 연구의 목적에 따라 아래와 같이 연구문제를 선정하였다.

연구문제1. 유아교육전공자로서 엄마대학원생이 학업과 자녀양육을 병행하며 느끼는 보람은 무엇인가?
연구문제2. 유아교육전공자로서 엄마대학원생이 학업과 자녀양육을 병행하며 느끼는 어려움은 무엇인가?
연구문제3. 유아기 자녀를 둔 유아교육전공 엄마대학원생으로서 학업과 자녀양육 병행을 위한 양육지원과 관련한 요구는 무엇인가?

이를 위하여 연구자는 2016년 12월부터 2017년 2월까지 약 3개월 동안, 연구참여자 5명을 대상으로 그들의 학업·양육 병행 경험 및 양육지원 요구에 대한 심층면담을 진행하였다. 심층면담의 결과 분석 및 주요 내용을 연구문제에 따라 요약하면 아래와 같다.

첫째, 엄마대학원생의 학업과 양육 병행 경험으로 인한 보람을 살펴본 연구결과, 연구참여자들은 ‘자녀양육의 의미를 인식, 자아실현의 길, 학업에 대한 가족의지지, 자녀에게 미치는 긍정적인 영향’등의 경험에서 보람을 갖는 것으로 나타났다.

둘째, 엄마대학원생의 학업과 양육 병행 경험으로 인한 어려움을 살펴본 연구결과, 개인적 측면의 어려움과 사회적 측면의 어려움으로 나누어 볼 수 있었다. 먼저 개인적 측면에서는 ‘건강의 적신호, 가족들의 부담과 희생, 소원해지는 주변관계, 학업수행의 어려움, 자녀양육의 어려움, 후속 출산에 대한 부담과 고민’으로 나타났다. 사회적 측면에서는 ‘제도와 정책의 사각지대에 놓인 대학원생’으로 직업으로서 인정받지 못하며, 육아지원제도의 한계에 대한 것으로 나타났다.

셋째, 유아기 자녀를 둔 유아교육전공 대학원생으로서 학업과 자녀양육 병행을 위한 양육지원 관련 요구를 살펴본 연구결과, ‘학업과 자녀 양육 병행에 대한 사회적 인정과 관심, 학업과 양육 병행을 위한 지원제도 확충’으로 나타났다.

이상의 결과를 바탕으로 우리 사회에서 학업과 양육을 병행하며 살아가고 있는 엄마대학원생의 생각과 구체적인 실제 경험들을 살펴볼 수 있었다. 이는 우리 사회에서 일·가정양립에 있어 사각지대에 놓여있는 부모대학원생에 대한 적극적 관심과 함께 국가·사회적 차원에서의 연구를 통하여 그들의 현실적 어려움을 해소할 지원 및 제도를 마련하다는데 기초 자료를 제공할 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study involves graduate school student moms who do Ph. Ds in Early Childhood Education while raising their infant children and focuses on their experience balancing studying and child rearing. The purpose of this study is to find proper childcare support solutions and to provide a database for childcare policies which are tailor-made for those married graduate female students’ job preparation and employment by understanding their needs from the government and society.

Regarding the goal of this study, research problems were chosen as follows:

Research problem1. What makes you feel rewarded in balancing studying and child rearing as a Ph. D. candidate in Early Childhood Education?

Research Problem2. What’s the difficulties you face in balancing studying and child rearing as a Ph. D. candidate in Early Childhood Education?

Research problem3. What’s your need for childcare supports for balancing studying and child rearing as an Early Child Education Ph.D. candidate having infant children?

The researcher conducted in-depth interviews with five participants on their experience in balancing studying and childrearing and their need for childcare supports for three months from December 2016 to February 2017. The analysis on the in-depth interview and main contents can be summarized as follows:

First, the participants feel rewarded when they recognize the meaning of child rearing, self-realization, family support for their study and its positive impacts on their children.

Second, the participants’ difficulties in balancing studying and child rearing can be categorized by two factors; personal and social issues. Personal issues are, for example, their health problems, burdens on their family, being distant from their friends, difficulties in studying and concerns about giving birth again. In the case of social problems, grad school student moms isolated from government and policy supports are not being recognized as working women and the limits of childcare support systems.

Third, the participants need social recognition, interests and policy supports for student parents who have to balance studying and child rearing.

The research illustrates thoughts and specific experiences of student mothers who balance studying and child rearing. This study will serve as a database to provide practical supports for student parents who are left in a blind spot in work-life balance with further studies at national and social levels and a growing attention on them.
