In industrial plants, particularly semiconductor and battery manufacturing facilities, the Fast Track method—running design and construction in parallel—is essential due to the short product life cycles. In this environment, adherence to the schedule takes precedence over cost. Consequently, rough estimation methods based on assumed load per area, rather than calculating actual building envelope loads, have become common practice to respond quickly to frequent design changes. However, this often leads to over-design, exceeding the actual required load.
The purpose of this study is to address these issues by establishing an automated HVAC load calculation process for industrial plants using Building Information Modeling (BIM) and AI Agents, incorporating the concept of Digital Twin. Based on Dr. Tao’s five-dimension Digital Twin model, the HVAC system was defined and fused into four virtual models: Geometry, Physics, Rule, and Behavior.
The research methodology consists of four steps.
First, data required for HVAC load calculation was automatically extracted and structured from the BIM model using Revit Dynamo.
Second, rule-based design criteria were established by coding design standards and regulations.
Third, a calculation module implemented in Python was used to automatically calculate loads applying the CLTD/SCL/CLF method, which is commonly used in industrial plants.
Finally, a process was implemented where an AI Agent integrates individual data and supports design review and optimization through natural language queries.
To verify the proposed system, an empirical study was conducted on an industrial plant project. The results showed a significant reduction in data entry and report generation time, cutting the total required time by approximately 79% compared to the existing process. Furthermore, compared to the conventional method applying assumed values, the precision calculation based on actual BIM data resulted in a cooling load reduction of about 20%, proving that over-design can be prevented.
This study established an automated load calculation process using BIM and AI Agents by introducing the Digital Twin concept to industrial plant HVAC systems and verified it through actual project implementation. The constructed system prevents over-design and enables optimal design by applying actual envelope information based on BIM instead of the conventional assumed load per area method, significantly improving work efficiency and reliability compared to manual work. By digitally transforming engineers' experience and knowledge to implement intelligent design, this study is expected to serve as a significant foundation for future innovation in engineering tasks.
