As people have more leisure time and concern more about their physical and mental well-being, active leisure such as participating in sport is gaining attention. Among various recreational sports, basketball, while not as populous in enthusiasts as soccer, tennis, or badminton, stands as one of the top four professional sports in the country, with a solid base of avid followers actively engaging in club activities and competition tournaments. The deep involvement and sustained participation of these club basketball participants can lead to exercise addiction, a condition with both positive and negative aspects, necessitating ongoing research. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between sport commitment, exercise addiction, and life satisfaction among club basketball participants, and to provide basic data for successful leisure activities which will help them lead to healthy physical and mind.
To accomplish the purpose of this study, club basketball members who have participated in basketball tournaments were selected as the population. Of the total 320 questionnaires collected, 305 questionnaires were used for the final analysis, excluding 15 copies with insincere responses. SPSS Statistics 26.0 and AMOS 22.0 programs were used to analyze the data. Frequency analysis was conducted to examine the demographic characteristics of the participants in this study, and confirmatory factor analysis and reliability analysis were conducted to verify the validity and reliability of the questionnaire. Independent sample t-test and one-way ANOVA were used to determine the differences in sport commitment, exercise addiction, and life satisfaction according to demographic characteristics. In addition, correlation analysis and structural equation model analysis were conducted to verify the relationship between sport commitment, exercise addiction, and life satisfaction.
The results of this study are as follows. First, the differences in sport commitment by demographic characteristics were significant in gender, participation time, and participation frequency. Second, the differences in exercise addiction by demographic characteristics were significant in gender, participation time, participation frequency, and exercise career. Third, the differences in life satisfaction by demographic characteristics were significant in age group, participation time, participation frequency, and exercise career. Fourth, sport commitment had a significant positive effect on exercise addiction. Fifth, exercise addiction had a significant positive effect on life satisfaction. Sixth, sport commitment had no significant effect on life satisfaction. Seventh, exercise addiction had a full mediating effect on the relationship between sport commitment and life satisfaction.
