This study seeks to obtain basic data for preserving precious Buddhist cultural
heritage and people's property by identifying problems with forest fires in
temples by identifying vegetation and flora distributed in and around 10 temples
in Jinju-si. The vascular plants that appeared in these 10 temple forest survey
sites were 72 taxa of Cheonggoksa, 85 taxa of Chunglimsa, 54 taxa of Uigoksa,
69 taxa of Dubangsa, 106 taxa of Eungseoksa, 132 taxa of Seongseongsa, 98
taxa of Seonhaksa, 86 taxa of Jeongbeopsa, and 103 of Munsusa. 79 taxa were
found in Baegunsa. Regarding the vegetation of the target area of this study,
Chunglimsa (Chamaecyparis obtusa and Pinus,) and Munsusa were found to be
dominated by Pinus., Cheonggoksa (Quercus variabilis and Pinus densiflora),
Dubangsa (Quercus variabilis and Pinus densiflora), Eungseoksa (Pinus densiflora
Zelkova serrata and Pinus thunbergii) and Seonhaksa (Quercus variabilis and
Pinus densiflora) form a mixed forest. The middle and lower floors of
Jeongbeopsa Temple were found to be planted with fire-resistant trees such as
Ligustrum japonicum and Viburnum odoratissimum var. awabuki and about 50%
of the upper and middle floors of Uigoksa Temple and Seonjeonsa Temple were
Quercus with strong fire resistance. In order to preserve temples vulnerable to fires and valuable Buddhist
cultural heritage from large-scale forest fires caused by climate warming,
Viburnum odoratissimum var. awabuki , Camellia japonica, Torreya nucifera,
Ligustrum japonicum, Osmanthus fragrans var. aurantiacus, Cephalotaxus
harringtonia, Taxus cuspidata, Camellia sinensis, Eurya japonica and Ginkgo
biloba with relatively higher ignition points than Pinus densiflora forests, Pinus
thunbergii forests and deciduous broad-leaved forests with low flash points. It
is necessary to prevent temples and temple cultural properties from being
destroyed by forest fires by creating fire-fighting forests with trees and to
preserve and protect temple forests with cultural and historical values.
