The purpose of this study is to examine the association between parent-child relationships, appearance satisfaction, self-esteem and dating relationship satisfaction. A total of 250 college students (mean age= 22.9, 46.8% boys) participated in this study. College students filled out a set of questionnaires regarding parent-child relationships, appearance satisfaction, self-esteem and dating relationship satisfaction. Pearson's correlation, simple regression and multiple regression were used for data analysis.
The main results of this study can be summarized as follows:
First, the higher parent-child relationships were, the higher self-esteem and dating relationship satisfaction were. In other words, parent-child relationships have positive associations between self-esteem and dating relationship satisfaction
Second, the higher appearance satisfaction was, the higher self-esteem was. Thus, appearance satisfaction has positive associations between self-esteem.
Third, it was found out that not only did parent-child relationships have a direct effect on dating relationship satisfaction, but it also had indirect effect on it through self-esteem.
Fourth, appearance satisfaction had an effect on dating relationship satisfaction only through a self-esteem.
In conclusion, parent-child relationships had not only a direct effect on dating relationship satisfaction, but also had an indirect effect through a self-esteem. So, self-esteem functioned as partial mediation. On the other hand, appearance satisfaction had an effect on dating relationship satisfaction only through a self-esteem. So, self-esteem functioned as complete mediation.
The results of this study are beneficial for the programs which are aimed at improving the dating relationship satisfaction by declaring one's family factors and psychological factors.
