최소주의와 EPP : EPP 준수를 위한 촉발요인과 도출과정을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

지배결속이론(GB Theory)에서 구구조 조건(PS-rule)으로 설명되었던 EPP현상은 Chomsky(1993)에 의해 최소주의이론(Minimalist Theory)이 도입되면서 자질점검(feature checking)의 일환으로 분석된다. 이러한 변화에 맞추어 최소주의 이론 하에서 이루어진 다양한 EPP 연구는 EPP현상의 촉발요인과 그 도출과정 분석이 주요한 연구 과제가 되었다. 이에 따라 본 논문에서는 EPP를 분석하는 다양한 관점에 대해 살펴보고 EPP현상을 설명하는 가장 적합한 이론은 무엇인지에 관해 고찰해보고자 한다.
위와 같은 연구 목적을 달성하기 위해 본 논문의 2장에서는 EPP와 관련한 통사이론의 흐름을 지배결속이론에서부터 최소주의이론에 이르기까지 살펴보고자 한다. 다음으로 3장에서는 동사구 내부 주어 가설(vP Internal subject hypothesis)을 증명하고 주어가 의미역구조에서 표면구조로 이동하는 것을 확인해 볼 것이다. 4장에서는 EPP가 형식자질점검 또는 자질일치를 통해 만족된다는 Chomsky(1993, 1995, 2000, 2001)의 분석을 살펴보고자 한다. 마지막으로 5장에서는 EPP현상의 촉발요인을 형식자질점검 외에서 찾는 다음의 연구들을 고찰해 볼 것이다. Lasnik(2001)과 Kim(2001)은 EPP현상을 음운부현상(PF-effect)으로 분석한다. 이숙희(2001)는 EPP 효과를 위한 의무적(obligatory) 주어이동은 장소구 전치와 같은 수의적(optional) 주어이동과 구별되어야 한다고 주장한다. 이숙희(2001)에 따르면 전자는 순수하게 통사적 자질점검을 위한 이동이지만 후자는 음운부 현상이다. 반면, 김재민 & 최은정(2012)은 수의적 주어이동 현상의 촉발요인을 외곽자질(Edge Feature)이라 가정한다. 마지막으로 김성헌(2013)은 허사 there 구문에서 주어이동을 EPP에 의한 것이 아니라, 의미해석복합체(Semantic Interpretive Complex: INT)에 의한 것이라고 주장한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

While EPP phenomenon was driven by a phrase structure rule in GB Theory, it has been explained as a result of feature-driven derivation in Minimalist approaches after Chomsky(1993). A lot of research about EPP has mainly focused on what is the triggering feature of EPP and how is the derivation process for EPP satisfaction. Hence, this thesis aims to investigate various perspectives about EPP and find out a convincing approach which best explains EPP phenomenon in the framework of Minimalist Theory.
To achieve this goal, Chapter II is allowed to review theoretical issues relevant to EPP from GB Theory to Minimalist Theory. Chapter Ⅲ deals with theoretical and empirical evidences of vP Internal subject hypothesis, and subject movement from a theta position to a surface position as well. Chapter Ⅵ mainly covers EPP derived in terms of feature checking or feature Agree, which was discussed in Chomsky(1993, 1995, 2000, and 2001). In Chapter Ⅴ, other various perspectives about EPP, which are nonmorphological, are introduced. To be specific, Lasnik(2001) and Kim(2001) deals with EPP effect as a PF requirement. Lee(2001) argues that an obligatory subject movement for EPP effect should be distinguished from an optional movement like locative inversion. The first is a purely syntactic feature-driven movement, but the second is a post-syntactic PF phenomenon. Kim & Choi(2012) attributes EPP to an optional subject movement caused by Edge feature(EF). Lastly, Kim(2013) suggests that EPP phenomena in there construction is not caused by EPP-feature but Semantic Interpretive Complex(INT).
