Discussions on the importance of a communication ability in Korean education continuously become an issue. Cultural lexicon education dealing with Korean and the concept of culture ultimately aims to improve the communication ability. As the “Internationally-used Korean Standard Curriculum” enabling to variably apply the curriculum to be suitable for learning purposes and situations of educational sites and learners is recently developed, it has prepared for objective reference standards by setting standards in a big picture. What is considered as important in this context is cultural lexicon. Since the term “cultural lexicon” in this study is closer to the meaning of lexicon collection rather than the meaning of words, language, or vocabulary, it corresponds to lexicon having the meaning of vocabulary, glossary, and list.
The communication ability improvement that can be an ultimate objective in foreign language education can be realized when a cultural ability based on a language ability is combined. The reason why the connection between language and culture should not be ignored lies here, when the expansion of the teaching-learning method to improve Korean-related interested parties’ communication ability is carried out. Although such critical mind did not occur suddenly, concrete and in-depth discussions on the connection of language and culture really lack. Therefore the discussions have been naturally performed, centered on the issue of cultural lexicon (lexique culturel) adoption. The cultures of China and Korea can be said to have sharing experience historically and those may approach the sharing culture of the Chinese characters-using regions in terms of language. From a Chinese learners’ perspective, the reason that teaching-learning on lexicon implying the sharing culture is important lies here, when they want to improve the communication ability.
This study established the concept of Korean cultural lexicon,
prioritized the importance of cultural lexicon based on the analysis result, and presented it as a list. This study categorized the scope according to cultural lexicon nature, and presented three standards, namely frequency and cultural factor. The selection process of cultural lexicon is as follows: First, the cultural lexicon for education was selected by topic through the cultural lexicon in the intermediate level Korean teaching materials of three institutions. Second, the intermediate level words were looked for from the National Institute of the Korean Language to obtain objective data after the first classification. Third, search was carried out from the Corpus of the National Institute of the Korean Language to objectively check whether the classification is accurate and the frequency in the teaching materials was compared. Fourth, the ultimate cultural lexicon was classified by judging what the necessary lexicon is through a questionnaire survey for Chinese learners. Also, blended learning was suggested as an efficient and effective teaching-learning means
containing the selected cultural lexicon for education. Because cultural lexicon implies culture itself, the language and culture can be put on the close connection line. When the language ability and cultural ability
are combined, the communication ability can be improved. The re-establishment of the concept and patterns of cultural lexicon for Chinese learners and the cultural lexicon list made based on it are expected to help the improvement of a communication ability in Korean for Chinese learners.
