In classical vocal performance and musical theatre, the importance of the larynx has long been recognized, and extensive research as well as vocal techniques related to laryngeal control have been continuously developed. In contrast, within the field of contemporary music, the significance of laryngeal adjustment has been relatively underestimated due to factors such as microphone use and the stylistic diversity of genres. As a result, systematic education related to the larynx remains insufficient. Accordingly, this study aims to examine the effects of changes in laryngeal position on phonation, with a particular focus on contemporary singers.
In this study, experiments were conducted under three conditions: neutral laryngeal position, lowered laryngeal position, and raised laryngeal position. Based on the neutral laryngeal position, differences in phonation between the lowered and raised laryngeal conditions were comparatively analyzed. Resonance characteristics were examined using the Praat software by analyzing formant frequencies (F1–F5), maximum harmonic energy within the 2.4–3.2 kHz frequency band, and the presence of vocal intensity amplification. Vocal fold contact quotient (CQ) was measured using the EGG-D200. In addition, participants’ subjective
evaluations were collected through interviews and questionnaires to complement the objective data.
The analysis revealed that changes in laryngeal position had significant effects on both resonance characteristics and vocal fold contact.
Resonance analysis showed that under the lowered laryngeal condition, vocal intensity and maximum harmonic energy within the 2.4–3.2 kHz frequency band tended to increase. While these findings are consistent with previous studies reporting increases in vocal intensity and harmonic energy, the observed effects were attributed more to resonance enhancement resulting from a shift toward lower frequency regions rather than to the clustering of higher formants, such as the singer’s formant typically observed in classical singers. Under the raised laryngeal condition, results differed from those commonly reported in traditional vocal studies. Across all participants, the mean value of the second formant (F2) showed the greatest increase, and most participants exhibited maintained or increased vocal intensity and harmonic energy. In contemporary singing, phonation strategies that raise F2 to enhance lyrical intelligibility and tonal clarity may have influenced the outcomes observed in this experiment. Similar tendencies were also observed in the vocal fold contact measurements.
Analysis of the vocal fold contact quotient indicated that while some participants exhibited increased vocal fold contact under the lowered laryngeal condition, consistent with findings reported in previous studies focused on classical singing, the majority of participants showed the greatest increase in vocal fold contact under the raised laryngeal condition. This tendency may be interpreted as being associated with phonation strategies that employ stronger vocal fold contact to facilitate high-pitch production and enhance lyrical intelligibility, as discussed above.
Through this study, it was observed that changes in laryngeal position exert significant effects on phonation in contemporary singers. It is therefore hoped that more active and systematic research on laryngeal positioning will be conducted within the field of contemporary music in the future.
