This study aims to examine the difficulties of accounting workers at senior welfare centers according to career experience and the characteristics of accounting work by exploring their work experience. Based on this, the researcher aims to increase the understanding of employees dealing with accounting and accounting tasks at senior welfare centers.
Exploring the work experience of accounting employees at senior welfare centers, the researcher found it important to study the characteristics of accounting, common factors of accounting workers with different work experience, and difficulties coming from the work and environment in investigating the types of efforts to overcome such problems. In this regard, the research problem was established as follows: “What work experience do accounting workers at senior welfare centers have?” Based on this, the experience of the research subjects was organized into a general structure to understand the characteristics of accounting work and their experiences.
For this research problem, data was collected through in-depth interviews with six participants with more than four years of work experience at senior welfare centers. They were selected using the purposive sampling. For about two and a half months from mid-January 2020, one or two sessions of one-on-one interviews were conducted for each participant. The recorded data was analyzed based on Giorgi's four-phase phenomenological method and key points were drawn, based on which categories and sub-categories were developed.
The results of the analysis using the phenomenological method are as follows: First, the data analysis resulted in four categories including All Kinds of Adversities, Sustained Effort, Learning by Hard Effort, and Achieving a Goal through Hard Work. Based on the experience of accounting workers at senior welfare centers, the characteristics of the work and the difficulties in the workplace were examined and the factors and processes to overcome them were investigated.
For All Kinds of Adversities, the factors causing difficulties coming from superiors, coworkers and their own work performance were explored. As for Sustained Effort, the characteristics of accounting tasks and their desire for improved work conditions were analyzed. The factors for building a healthy accounting work environment were identified through work experience for Learning by Hard Effort, and the process of adaptation and overcoming difficulties through efforts with superiors and coworkers and personal improvement was explored for Achieving a Goal Through Hard Work.
Second, based on the work experience of the accounting workers, a general structure was established by identifying common factors. According to their work experience, the difficulties of adapting to work and the environment and the positive factors that helped overcome such hardship were identified as “Overcoming and Growing from Setbacks,” “Becoming Stronger,” “Desire for Recognition,” and “Transcendental Role.” In addition, the methods of adapting to the work environment were explored by understanding the factors for continuous work and classifying the methods for accounting workers to overcome job difficulties into growth-expectation type, position-building type, adaptation-oriented type, and cooperation-improvement type.
The social welfare-political and practical significance of this study are as follows:
First, it is necessary to develop policy measures to improve the work condition of accounting workers and increase the social awareness about the job in order to manage the budget of senior welfare centers efficiently.
Second, it is required to establish a network of the same work and develop practical measures for the necessity of various types of training so as to increase the work efficiency of accounting workers and help them overcome difficulties.
Providing in-depth data for the understanding of the special work at senior welfare centers and accounting workers, This study is expected to be helpful for research on the work experience of people in charge of accounting.
