The methodical development of painting in the late 20th century, contemporary painting since 1970s and 1980s in particular, has significant tendency of depiction of corporeal action and temporal fragmentaion, which are the postmodern characteristics that largely dominates contemporary art. It is necessary to notice that depiction of corporeal action in painting is an immediate embodiment of personal value of human being by which the potential of painting is being extensive. On the other hand, in contemporary painting, temporality reveals its true meaning when leaving the vestige and fragmentation through deconstruction of temporal continuity by the traces of positive corporeal action. The narration of corporeal action accompanies and presents temporal fragmentation.
The purpose of this study is to reexamine post 20th century paintings in which the narration of corporeal action and temporal fragmentation appeared as one of the tendencies, also as the methodology to establish my work. To be more specific, it not only looks into the narration of corporeal action and fragmentation in conceptual and methodical aspects, but also inquires into how these aspects can be the painterly procedures through this process. This purpose deals with the narration of corporeal action and temporal fragmentation, in the aspect of the concept, it discusses the background of their appearances in detail through the consideration for history of preceding studies meanwhile the methodical aspect can be found through studying the work of Kangso Lee and Cy Tombly as exemplar artists. In addition, this process will ultimately suggest how these qualities reveal in my work
The summaries of results are as follow.
First, the narration of corporeal action and temporal fragmentation in Korean Materialist painting from 1970s to 1980s and western painting from 1950s to 1990s, coming through the modern and postmodern era, artists were interested in‘corporeal action’ in order to manifest the materiality by working on painting and sculpture. Moreover, Korean Monochrome paintings in 1980s presented temporal fragment with considering the body as a condition that is accompanied with action through the regression to plane. On the other hand, in western painting, Abstract Expressionism began to approach the narration of action of the artist. The Neo-Expressionism that came to the fore in postmodern art since 1980s gave rise to action-based expressional drive with rough handwritings and objects for the state of inner conscious of human being along with a contribution for temporal fragmentation.
Secondly, following the definition of the notion,‘narration of corporeal action’, and‘temporal fragmentation’ as the methodical notion sprang from the lines of drawing‘corporeally’. These narrations of corporeal actions indicated that narration of corporeal action propounds the temporal issue fundamentally. This derived the factor by which painting left the question of space to highlight the time. In contemporary painting, the stroke is the evidence of artist’s action that segments temporal continuity to leave the vestige of fragmentation.
Thirdly, corporeal action and temporal fragmentation as a methodical notion took the number of handwritings, frequency of appearances, and their scattered level to suggest present state. To study periodic development of my work, I divided the artworks into the first and second period. Lastly, I comparatively analyzed the works of exemplar artists and mine to discuss the commonality and difference of the works to verify that narration of corporeal action and temporal fragmentation are revealed in my work.
To conclude, in contemporary painting, corporeal action and temporal fragmentation continuously appear through manifold variation. Regardless of the region, painting has common ground of corporeal action by which it deserted representative nature of painting and elevated exclusive realm of strokes by the gestures of the artists to observe the expressional virtue of lines.
