The purpose of this study is to develop and apply the reading guidance program of teaching climate change for third grade students of an elementary school and then is to examine its effect. To achieve such research purpose, this study analyzed contents related to climate change in textbooks and teacher's guide books of 7th elementary school curriculum, and as the research subjects, it chose several books which were suitable for 3rd grade students of an elementary school. Based on analyzed contents, this study developed reading guidance program for education of climate change and examined its effect using the questionnaire after the class.
The results of this study are like followings:
First, according to the result of analyzing contents related to climate change in textbooks and teacher's guide books of 7th elementary school curriculum, the textbooks which dealt with educational contents related to climate change were Disciplined Life, Intelligent Life, Pleasant Life, Korean Language, Moral education, Social studies, Science, Physical education and Practical arts which ranged from first grade to 6th grade. Such 9 textbooks were consisted of total 85 times of classes and used for education.
This result showed that class time of 9 textbooks accounted for 1.8% of total class time of overall textbooks. It represented that educational contents about the area of cognition and attitude were smaller than the area of knowledge. It also showed that each contents dealt with partial elements of climate change or the knowledge about atmospheric phenomena, and influences of climate change and plans for reduction of climate change were suggested restrictively and repetitively.
Second, this study developed reading guidance program of teaching climate change for 3rd grade students of an elementary school. This program was organized for students to be able to learn general things related to climate change systematically. With topics such as the meaning of climate change, the causes of climate change, the influences of climate change, the plans for reduction of climate change and assurance of putting such plans into practice, this program was consisted of total 9 times classes. Focused on research subjects of being consisted of environmental experts and teachers, this program received validity test in total 7 perspectives such as systemicity of content's organization, easiness of using the program, suitability of subjects, interest of students, appropriateness of class time, suitability of teaching method, expectation of the class's effect and etc. Based on the results of the test, this program was modified and complemented.
Third, this study performed total 9 classes using modified and complemented program. Its result showed that the score of experimental group after the class was significantly higher than that before the class in all areas of cognition, knowledge, attitude related to climate change. On the other hand, comparative group did not have significant difference in the score before and after the class.
Fourth, experimental group showed significant results in the area of cognition, knowledge and attitude about climate change, so that it demonstrated the effect of the program in the class.
Therefore, it can be expected that the reading guidance program which was developed in this study might be a useful tool of motivating that students of research subject can act in order to understand and cognize climate change rightly and to reduce it.
Based on the results of this study, if suggesting plans for education related climate change, they are like followings;
First, it is desirable that contents related climate change are being dispersed and treated over all grades and several textbooks while they leaned to the area of knowledge, as a result, dealing with them equally over all areas is required. In addition, the program, which informs severeness and influence of climate change to all grades, and the development of various audio-visual materials are needed. Also, various media should be used and programs including diverse learning activities have to be produced. Finally, with the improvement of cognition and knowledge related to climate change, in order to keep the attitude of trying to practice the plans for reduction of climate change and to continue to keep such change, long-term and follow-up education are required.
