The objective of this study is to analyze the feelings like disgust, shame, and compassion shown in a novel, 「The Garden of Childhood」 by Oh Jeong-Hee by applying Nussbaum’s philosophy of feelings. Compared to the existing researches aiming to interpret the feelings of the characters in Oh Jeong-Hee’s novel as sorrow, shame, and anger through the key words such as compulsion, anxiety, hysteria, regression, and obsession, this study attempts to reveal that the disgust, shame, and compassion are the core feelings of initial novels by Oh Jeong-Hee. Based on the logic that feelings would be separated from desire, mood, and motive, Nussbaum suggested his own characteristic philosophy of feelings of disgust, shame, and compassion. This philosophy of feelings, suggested by Nussbaum could be a frame to more closely analyze feelings of numerous characters in Oh Jeong-Hee's novels.
The feeling of disgust is materialized as violence and punishment of male characters cognizing female characters as the objects of disgust. Nussbaum paid attention to the fact that the disgust was playing a role in maintaining and strengthening the hierarchy of ruling and being ruled inside of human groups because the ruling group degraded the ruled into objects that would deserve disgust, by perceiving the characteristic attributes of theirs as something unclean or brutal. Under this context, in this work, the metaphors of feminine body is revealed as an object of disgust, and especially, through the look of a mother who does not come back home late at night or the look of an elder sister going to downtown to avoid her elder brother’s surveillance, the elder brother’s projective disgust is dominantly shown. Moreover, this projective disgust is also shown in the look of a carpenter who puts her daughter having a love affair in hold. The carpenter’s behavior of locking up Bune in a room, which is working as a physical tool of morality, could be an extreme expression of projective disgust against unclean and immoral body.
The feeling of shame is related to the consciousness of the yellow-eyed viewing female characters suggested as immoral looks. Through the characters with immoral body such as mother, elder sister, and Bune, the yellow-eyed initially realizes beings of women, and this realization is expanded from shyness to shame. All the looks like her own fat body with yellow hair, theft, and immoral mother and elder sister are lacking in perfection, which arouses the basic shame in the yellow-eyed. The family members' behaviors getting out of the standard of absolute perfection, such as absence of father, immoral mother, violent elder brother, and chicken theft in family's conspiracy are not in the category judged as normal, so that the shame of social nature is aroused.
As a core feeling of this work, the compassion is revealed as self-compassion and the expansion of compassion. In the results of projecting her future look onto the looks of female beings, the yellow-eyed reaches self-compassion, and here, out of the three cognitive elements of compassion mentioned by Nussbaum, the judgment of size and the judgment that it should not happen are applied. This self-compassion is clearly shown in the look of the yellow-eyed with tears, standing in front of a mirror. At this time, the feeling felt by the yellow-eyed would be the self-compassion including the judgment that her own future life might not be much different from the lives of her mother, elder sister, and Bu-Ne. The yellow-eyed realizes that her life could be similar to theirs. This self-compassion is led to the expansion of compassion. The yellow-eyed empathizes with and feels sad about Bune’s pain through the imagination by including Bu-Ne in a part of her interest. When the yellow-eyed imagines the character of Bu-Ne and feels pain, the self-compassion is expanded to compassion for others.
