오정희 소설의 여성 인물 연구 = Study on the female characters in the novels by Oh Jung Hee

국문초록


이 논문은 오정희의 글쓰기가 어떻게 구현되고 있는지를 밝히고자 하였다. 당시 작품들과 다른 경로를 걷고 있는 듯 보이는 오정희의 소설이 특히 내면으로만 침잠하는 것처럼 보였던 이유와 사회로부터 격리되고 소외된 인물들을 전면에 배치한 이유에 대해서 작가의 의도를 살펴볼 필요가 있다.
이 연구는 1960-1990년대 발표된 오정희의 작품을 전체적으로 살펴보면서 시대 영향을 받는 개인의 삶을 집중 조명해보고자 한다. 오정희 소설의 주인공들은 끊임없이 자신의 존재적 근원에 대한 성찰을 시도한다. 그 모습은 주로 자기 독백이 많다. 또한 주인공들은 자신의 정체성을 찾기 위한 방편으로 죽음에의 사유를 드러내기도 하는데, 그들에게 있어서 죽음의 의미는 ‘삶 속에 내재되어 있는 삶과 죽음의 공존’으로 인식되어 있다. 죽음의식은 허무와 비관에 빠져 절망에 그치고 마는 것이 아닌 ‘삶에 대한 새로운 인식’의 가능성에 대한 매개체로 작용한다. 죽음을 통해 삶의 생성과 재생을 배우고, 예민하고 섬세한 지각을 통해서 자아의식이 성장한다.
오정희 소설에는 아버지의 부재로 인하여 가장의 역할을 하는 어머니, 생존을 위해 온전한 모성의 자리를 이탈한 어머니의 모습이 다양하게 그려져 있다. 이것은 모성보다는 여성으로서의 정체성을 추구하고자 하는 인물, 내면의 불구를 가진 여성 인물들이다. 그들은 가족 안에서 자신의 위치에 대해 상실감을 토로하지만, 이 설정은 작가의 의도적 배치일 것으로 판단된다. 여성 인물을 통해 여성의 삶을 여성의 언어로 드러내고자 하는 오정희 문학에는 현실인식에 대한 깊이 있는 통찰이 묻어난다. 이를 토대로 여성인물의 연령대를 시기별로 나누어 섬세한 분석을 하였으며, 오정희 소설에 나타나는 신화적인 성격에 대해서도 심층적으로 탐구하였다.
오정희의 작품에는 여러 가지 여성적 말하기 방식이 드러난다. 기존의 언어로는 스스로의 감정을 표현할 경로를 찾지 못했던 여성들은 침묵하거나 독백한다. 오정희가 구현하는 여성인물들은 여성적 말하기를 통해 남성과의 분리 및 격리, 소외된 자아가 어떻게 정체성을 찾아가는지를 주목했다. 이를 통해 오정희는 작품 속에서 욕망의 추구와 대립되는 상실에 대한 좌절감을 내면의식의 성찰을 통해 드러내었고 이러한 작업을 통해 섬세한 내면 탐구를 효과적으로 형상화하고 있다. 한 사람의 인생에 역사가 반영되는 것처럼 때때로 작가의 분신과도 같은 여성 인물들의 궤적을 쫓아가다보면 오정희 작품 특유의 난해한 서술과 의미의 모호성들이 오정희 소설의 독특한 특징으로 이해될 수 있지 않을까 한다. 이러한 시도들은 작가가 추구하고자 하는 문학적 형상화를 효과적으로 수용하는데 많은 도움이 되리라 생각한다.

Study on the female characters in the novels by Oh Jung Hee

This paper seeks to identify how the writing of Oh Jung Hee takes shape. Oh's novels seem to take on a different path than other works of the same era. In particular, the reason that Oh's novels seems to go further deep into one's inner world and present at the forefront the characters who are isolated from society are worth studying for the writer's intentions.
This study surveys the works of Oh from 1960 to the 1990s to shed light on how an individual's life is affected by the times. The characters in Oh's novels consistently attempt a reflection on their existence. Characters also show contemplation of death as a measure to seek their self-identify. For them, the meaning of death is perceived as the 'co-existence of life and death inherent in life.' Death consciousness serves as a medium that enables 'new perception of life' that goes beyond life that seems pessimistic and pointless. Through death the characters learn the creation and re-creation of life and their self-consciousness grows through delicate perception.
In Oh's novels are various mothers, including those who play the role of a breadwinner due to the absence of the father or those who go beyond the traditional model of maternity in order to survive. These female characters are those who suffer from an inner disability and those who seek identity as a woman and not simply as a mother. They feel a sense of loss at their position within the family, but this setting seems to be intentionally done by the writer. Oh's literature portrays an in-depth insight into reality by seeking to describe the life of women through their own language. Based on this assumption, the female characters were analyzed in detail by age group. The character's mythical personalities were also investigated in-depth.
In Oh's works are various types of feminine speech. Women who had a hard time finding a channel to express their emotions using existing language keep silent, derail from ordinary life or slip into monologue. The female characters that Oh realizes focus on searching their identity and the self that had been isolated through feminine speech. By doing so, the frustration felt from the desires that are never met are portrayed through an inner reflection. Just as an individual's life carries tones of the era she lives in the orbits of the female characters created by the writer leave traces of the writer's intention and thoughts, despite the arcane descriptions unique to Oh's writing. Such an attempt is expected to enable literary embodiment to be more effectively adopted as the writer intended it to be.
