Traditional sculpture was a three-dimensional subject which existed in the surrounding space, but the materials and techniques varied according to the development of science and industrial culture. The object was made through an expansion of molding style. Among the best is Junk sculpture, which has put the Junk of modern society into the world of Art.
Assemblage for junk sculpture is defined as "collection" or "assembling". It is the technique that renders the three-dimensional sculpture into plain pictures though uniting the many kinds of things around us. The collage of the cubists were the first junk sculpture. "Ready-made" appeared as an expressive techniques of the anti-art conception of the dada period, using objects a way to express idealistic fantasy. Assemblage that expanded the concept of collage and expressed junk sculpture have been started to revives very widely and became popular, because objects have been accumulated in Europe and the U S. since the 1950s. Junk sculpture assembled the object and expressed its assemblage using junk kinetics and was expanded in material part through assemblage expression way of assembly and compression using junk cars.
It unified the environment and art through modem material investigation and meant a change of material conception with the situation of the period. It also presented an infinite possibility of expressional media and techniques. Assemblage techniques of expressing junk sculpture expanded the types into kinetic art, light art, and ground paper art in modern sculpture. This thesis therefore examines the origins and development of junk sculpture, examining the work using junk from the 1950's to the present and analysing the techniques and special features in junk sculpture.
