The Metabolic syndrome encompasses significant risk factors for cardiovascular disease and establishes diagnostic criteria that encompass the presence of more than three risk factors. This study aimed to examine the influence and correlation between the health behavior and subjective sleep quality of night shift workers who undergo special health checkups, as well as identify the risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome.
The clinical diagnosis of metabolic syndrome was performed on a total of 3,698 individuals, comprising 2,384 men and 1,314 women. The diagnostic criteria encompassed several factors, including abdominal obesity (defined as a waist circumference exceeding 102cm for men and 88cm for women), elevated triglyceride levels (above 150mg/dL), low HDL-cholesterol levels (below 40mg/dL for men and below 50mg/dL for women), high blood pressure (measured at 130/85mmHg), and fasting blood glucose levels.
The study employed the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) as a tool for evaluating the quality of sleep, classifying it into four categories: "no insomnia," "some insomnia," "moderate insomnia," or "severe insomnia."
The prevalence of the risk group for metabolic syndrome, which is defined as having multiple metabolic syndrome risk factors, was found to be higher in men compared to women. Additionally, the prevalence of this at-risk population was found to be positively correlated with advancing age and higher body mass index (BMI). In addition, the group of individuals who smoked exhibited a greater risk in comparison to the group of individuals who did not smoke. Similarly, the group characterized by high-frequency drinking exhibited a greater risk in comparison to the group practicing abstinence. On the contrary, the group of individuals who consumed alcohol at a low frequency exhibited a relative risk of 0.79 in comparison to the group of individuals who abstained from alcohol consumption. The risk of metabolic syndrome was found to be high in both the practice group and the medicine use group, depending on physical activity and medicine use.
The assessment of sleep quality revealed that insomnia was the most prevalent condition (51.5%), followed by slight insomnia (27.8%), moderate insomnia (14.4%), and severe insomnia (6.3%). Additionally, individuals with severe insomnia had the highest risk of developing metabolic syndrome (81.0%), followed by those with insomnia (49.6%), and moderate insomnia (40.6%). Compared to individuals without insomnia, the relative risk was 0.84 for those with mild insomnia and 0.69 for those with moderate insomnia. The frequency of severe insomnia is 4.27 times.
Abdominal obesity (58.4%), high blood sugar (53.9%), severe insomnia (51.7%), low high-density cholesterol (47.5%), high blood pressure (45.1%), and high neutral fat (43.7%) are all factors that contribute to the development of metabolic syndrome. In addition, the health behavior change of night workers and improvement in sleep quality (43.7%) are also crucial in preventing metabolic syndrome.
