실외놀이에서 유아의 물리적 환경 활용 실태와 실외놀이 내용에 대한 질적 연구 = A Qualitative Study on the Uses of Physical Environments and Outdoor Play at Educational Agencies for Young Children

This study set out to investigate the uses of physical environments and outdoor play at educational agencies for young children by adopting qualitative methods. For this purpose, the investigator interviewed teachers in charge of four- and five-year-old classes at three kindergartens and two childcare centers of similar physical environments and size with respect to outdoor play, as well as observed young children at outdoor play. The children played outdoors around the given environment and discovered and applied the play materials needed for activities based on their experiences, utilizing the physical environments in their own ways.
In the process, diverse types of play emerged during outdoor play including role play and block play in addition to simple physical activities. The ecological activities performed outdoors made both the young children and teachers the subjects of outdoor play. These results indicate a need for more diverse physical environments for outdoor play, the teacher's roles to promote and encourage the thoughts of young children as the organizers of play environments, and various outdoor activities to give the children experiences of nature.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 질적 연구방법을 통해 유아교육기관의 실외놀이와 관련하여 유아의 물리적 환경 활용실태와 실외놀이 내용에 대해 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 실외놀이를 위한 물리적 환경과 규모가 비슷한 유치원 3곳과 어린이집 2곳을 대상으로 만 4, 5세 유아들의 실외놀이 상황을 관찰하고, 학급을 담당하고 있는 교사와 면담을 실시하였다. 그 결과 유아는 실외놀이시 고정놀이시설이나 교사가 제시한 환경을 활용하여 놀이를 진행했고, 유아 자신의 경험을 토대로 활동에 필요한 놀잇감을 발견하고 응용하며 유아 나름대로 물리적 환경을 활용하는 모습도 나타났다. 이러한 과정에서 실외놀이는 단순히 신체활동뿐 아니라 역할놀이나 블록놀이와 같은 다양한 형태의 놀이가 나타났다. 또한, 실외에서 이루어지는 산책활동과 생태활동은 유아, 교사 모두를 실외놀이의 주체로 만들었다. 이러한 결과는 실외놀이를 위한 다양한 물리적 환경마련, 놀이환경 구성자로서의 유아의 사고를 촉진하고 격려하는 교사의 역할 그리고 자연을 경험할 수 있는 다양한 실외활동이 필요함을 보여주었다.
