The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of Self-Exploration Program Applying Tarot Cards on the self-efficacy of juvenile delinquents in a bid to provide an opportunity for them to explore themselves through the vehicle of tarot, to take a deep look at their own inner side, to help a just understanding about themselves, to get a affirmative attitude and ultimately to build a more positive self-efficacy.
A hypothesis was formulated:
There might be a significant difference in self-efficacy pretest and posttest scores between an experimental group that receives Self-Exploration Program Applying Tarot Cards and a control group that doesn't.
The subjects in this study were 20 teenaged boys who were charged to consultation office by C district court. After an experimental group and a control group were organized with ten each, both groups attended an orientation on Self-Exploration Program Applying Tarot Cards, and then they took a pretest to evaluate their self-efficacy. Self-Exploration Program Applying Tarot Cards was provided to the experimental group during a five-week period of time, once a week, 50 minutes each. Every student in the experimental group received Self-Exploration Program in nine sessions, and no action was taken to the control group.
The Self-Exploration Program Applying Tarot Cards was prepared by rearranging Cho Kyung-Hee(2008)'s Tarot-Based Career-Searching Program and Lee Ji-Eun(2009)'s Tarot-Based Self-Search Program to provide program for juvenile delinquents.
The instrument used to verify the effect of the Program was Kim Ah-Young(1997)'s General Self-Efficacy Questionnaire. This questionnaire covered four areas with 24 items and employed a six-point scale.
To. see if the experimental group and control group were equivalent in the self-efficacy pretest, t-test was utilized, and Two-Way ANOVA was employed to look for any possible intergroup and intragroup difference in the subfactors of self-efficacy that involved self-confidence, self-regulation, preferences of task level.
The findings of the study were as follows:
First, the experimental group that received the Self-Exploration Program Applying Tarot Cards showed a more statistically significant improvement in collective average than the control group that didn't. It indicated that the Program was effective at instilling self-efficacy into the juvenile delinquents.
Second, the experimental group showed a more rise than the control group in the collective average of self-confidence, self-regulation and preferences of task level, which were the subfactors of self-efficacy. And their improvement was statistically significant.
Overall, the Self-Exploration Program Applying Tarot Cards had an effect on stepping up the self-efficacy of the juvenile delinquents and thereby brought a favorable change th their self-efficacy.
