Safety Assessment of a Deep Geological Repository Using GoldSim under Complex Scenarios HYUNJIN YU Advisor : Prof. Jong Soon Song, Ph.D. Department of Nuclear Engineering Graduate School of Chosun University The disposal of High-Level Waste (HLW) requires long-term and stable management extending over hundreds of thousands of years, due to its high level radioactivity and long half-life. However, various disposal alternatives proposed internationally have not been realized due to social and economic constraints. At present, the option of managing and disposing of domestically generated waste within each country is being discussed. Among these options, deep geological disposal is evaluated as the most practical alternative, with proven long-term safety and economic feasibility. Despite the operation of numerous nuclear power plants in Korea, the absence of a disposal facility for HLW makes it urgent to establish measures to ensure safety. In this context, this study applied the FEPs(Features, Events, Processes) methodology to demonstrate the safety of a deep geological repository and derived a complex scenario combining an earthquake and human intrusion. By performing GoldSim modeling and simulation, this study aims to analyze radionuclide transport and environmental impacts under the given scenario, thereby confirming that the repository maintains sufficient barrier performance even under extreme conditions. The results of this study are expected to serve as important reference data for the future design and development of a safety assessment framework for domestic HLW repositories, and to contribute to building public trust in long-term management.
