비극적 내러티브에 대한 정서적 반응이 친사회적 행동 의도에 미치는 영향 : 넷플릭스 시리즈물 <더 글로리>의 감정이입, 공포, 카타르시스를 중심으로

This study analyzed how empathy, fear, and catharsis experienced while watching the Netflix Series <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><The Glory> influence viewers' behavioral intentions to help victims of bullying or unfair treatment in daily life. Specifically, this research empirically verified the relationship between pity(empathy), fear, and catharsis proposed in Aristotle's theory of tragedy in a modern context, and examined how these emotional experiences affect behavioral intentions through the key variables of the Theory of Planned Behavior(TPB).
The main findings are as follows. First, fear had significant positive effects on all dimensions of empathy, with particularly strong influences on emotional and associative empathy. Second, while cognitive empathy directly influenced attitude toward behaviors and subjective norms positively, emotional and associative empathy showed indirect effects through catharsis. Third, among the dimensions of catharsis, only 'emotional regulation for intellectual growth' showed significant positive effects on attitude toward behavior and perceived behavioral control. Fourth, while fear showed no direct effects on TPB variables, it demonstrated significant indirect effects through empathy and catharsis. Finally, among the TPB variables, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control showed significant positive effects on behavioral intentions.
These findings are significant in that they empirically demonstrate how fear and empathy induced by tragic narratives influence the formation of behavioral intentions through catharsis. Furthermore, this study expanded the theoretical understanding of Entertainment-Education(E-E) strategy effectiveness by integrating emotional factors into the Theory of Planned Behavior. Particularly, it reveals that emotional experiences influence behavioral intentions not through simple direct pathways, but through complex psychological mechanisms involving empathy and catharsis.
