Since the 1990s, critical public opinion has emerged about “popular history.” The same was true in academia. The “criticism“ of history researchers has also made it difficult for history researchers to inroads into areas where they can make contact to the public. As a result, those called “knowledge retailers” dominate “popular history” by leading various broadcasting and public lectures.
The researcher’s position in public history is passive rather than active, such as bystanders, critics, and following the public. So where should the researcher be located? Shouldn’t history researchers be “creators” who can lead the high quality history consumption? Public lectures, introductions through media, active participation and planning of history-related programs, entry into social media and calls for the establishment of institutional devices at the government level are also necessary measures.
Therefore, researchers also need to consider their activities as producers beyond mediators and critics. Of course, I’m not saying that all researchers should participate. Even if you participate indirectly, you should know the truth to make a proper comment. In order to do so, it is necessary to share and check the “historical popularization” and “public history” experienced by each person.
The gap between academia and ‘popular history’ is great. The reason for this is that researchers have not been very interested in or only have criticized about the history reproduced in the media and society. It is a step that requires mature consideration of how to connect with researchers to the public sector. Of course, the spread of research results should be continued.
Meanwhile, in order for a historian to act as a “creator,” he first needs space to express his own point of view independently. Social media has shown its potential as a representative space. However, the limit of contents produced by a group of researchers only is clear. It would be amateurish to do the entire planning and production process of content by themselves, and the quality of content would not be high enough compared efforts. Therefore, collaboration is necessary.
This paper focuses on corporations as a target for collaboration. The primary process here is to choose a company that sympathizes with researchers’ perspectives and problem-consciousness. Through this, companies should reproduce content that can contribute to the public domain, and researchers should create a structure that intervenes in society through specialized content in the public domain. In other words, rather than being dragged by the market, it is necessary to actively participate to lead the market and establish researchers’ activities in the public domain.
