We have observed the various expressive modes in the history of paintings. These expressive modes have undergone many changes by the conditions of the times and art historical characteristics and the streams of modes have been more characterized and arranged by the interpretation and division of art historians.
Painting has made many conversions of values as the expressive object of man himself excaping from the tool of divine service which only praised the medieval God to the imitation theory of Nature since ancient times. Therefore such conversion of values brought about the various expressive modes and gradually it was expressed by motional modes as the expression of inner world or psychological conflict, and in some cases it was expressed by intellectual modes which take a serious view of reason.
These expressions show the aesthetic characteristics according to each mode by acceptance of opposition in the history of painting. Therefore this study investigates the dualistic change process of emotional and intellectual expression from the view of art history and divides each expressive mode and characteristic by analysis.
Also this study discusses the mutual influence among the expressive modes of paintings in the context of art history and divides the artists of emotional and intellectual expression and interpretes their works from two sides and searches for the expressive modes according to each tendency of works.
Accordingly this study analyzes the painting modes and characteristics expressed by the artists and finds paintings historical meaning by analyzing their unique aesthetic values and revaluates their characteristics by comparing and analyzing their nature, and investigates the various resulting tendencies.
