In David Greig’s drama, a prominent theme is globalization, which encompasses the movement of people and various commodities and thinking, and has resulted in a reconfiguration of established notions of identity, culture, and place. Place holds significant importance in David Greig’s Drama. But, it has multiple layers. Firstly, a place can represent a familiar place where people shape their identities. Additionally, a place also serves as a battlefield where people contend with socio-political power. Moreover, there is also a non-place where individuals experience liberation from fixed identity and enjoy the feeling of passive joy. However, it is through the intersection of characters that these diverse layers of places become connected.
Consequently, this thesis aims to analyze Greig’s drama through the lens of mobility which enables a deeper understanding of both movements of people and significance underlying such movements. Mobility underscores the interconnectedness of movement and meaning and brings a new reckoning about contemporary society. Then, it reshapes the meaning of places and engenders new practices of mobility. This interconnectivity is closely linked to the journey narrative in that Greig put emphasis on his drama and imagination. For Greig, the true experience of landscape is more important than the passive trip as a consumer. His journey narrative not only resists the influence of capitalism and becomes a potent weapon in the context of this global era.
In this thesis, Europe(1994) and San Diego(2003) will be examined. Europe sets on a little town located in boundaries, where impending changes elicit varied responses from the characters. Their behaviours can be interpreted as expressions of sedentarism and nomadism, which have long been debated in the realms of mobility studies. Their mobilities finally contribute to the construction of a ‘new Europe’ which emerges in the wake of the fall of the Berlin Wall. On the other hand, San Diego takes place in the era of global air travel. Aeroplane is one of the symbols of the globalized world. Mobilities in San Diego show the crisis of traditional family relationships and the subversion of capitalistic and colonial power structures.
In Europe, Europe becomes a place for change and hope grounded in familiarity and interpersonal relationships. The final scene of Europe sees Katia and Adele embarking on their journey, thereby hinting at the potential of the journey narrative. San Diego, in turn, completes this narrative through its exploration of mobilities and experimentation with dramatic form. Therefore, analyzing these two plays serves as a starting point for comprehending the political imagination present in David Greig's dramas, while also providing insights into the dramatic landscape of the globalization era.
