Recently, problems related to private education have become a hot potato issue of society because private education expanded enough to threaten the existence of public education. In the midst of this, a lot of research has been done related to this situation, but most of it is from the viewpoint of the consumers of education, but research on the situation of private education, or the awareness of teachers, who is standing at the center of school education, on the private education of their children is difficult to find.
Therefore, the purpose of this research is to understand the awareness of teachers themselves, who is standing at the center of school education, as parents, about private education. Also, another purpose is to search for ways to solve the problems through examining the private education situation of the children, and through comparison analysis between parents who are teachers and those who are not.
The subjects of examination for this thesis are teacher parents and non-teacher parents living in Kangwon-do Chuncheon Wonju region with children ranging from 4th grade to 12th grade. There are 350 people in each group: teacher parent and non-teacher parent. The survey, which was used as the assessment tool, was written, based on pre-existing research data and documents on private education, the opinions of parents that are teachers on the field and those that are not, and advice from experts.
The contents of the survey is composed of 45 questions in 5 sections that consist of private education situation, correlation between private education and grades, awareness about private education, means to solve private education problems through public education, and awareness about public education and private education.
According to the characteristic of the collected data, frequency, percentage, verification, F verification was used, and the SPSS program was used for analysis.
The following is the summary of the results obtained from this thesis.
First, in the 'private education situation' sector, the result was that most of both teacher parents and non-teacher parents are paying for the private education of their children. The teacher parents focuses more on advanced learning, and the non-teacher parents, on supplemental learning. In the case of deciding whether or not to receive private education, in most cases, both teacher and non-teacher parents decide for their children, but as their children grows older, the children obtain more influence over the decision. Non-teacher parents feel that the burden of private education fees is heavier.
Second, in the 'correlation between private education and grades' section, both groups of parents think that private education helps enhance their child's grades, regardless of what stage of education their children is in.
Third, both groups of parents think that private education is needed, especially parents with middle school children felt this need the strongest.
Fourth, in the 'means to solve private education problems through public education' section, both groups of parents think that 'improvement of college entrance examination system' and 'alleviation of social academic cliquism' as important, and this was stronger for parents with children in high school.
Fifth, in the 'awareness of the excellence of public education compared to private education' section, both groups think that public education is more excellent in terms of 'ability of teachers', 'passion', 'occupation guidance', 'living guidance', and 'moral guidance', but in terms of <facility> or <classes>, they think that private education is superior. As for the teacher parents, their answers did not vary according to their child's age, but as for the non-teacher parents, their trust in public education drops significantly if their child is in high school.
These results provide important implications in establishing on-the-field methods to solve private education problems.
