집을 통한 내부와 외부의 경계적 공간 표현 연구 : 본인 작품 'House and transparent' 시리즈 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

공간과 인간은 서로를 지속적으로 필요로 한다. 일반적으로 건축물의 공간은 인간을 외부 환경으로부터 보호해주며 동시에 외부 환경과 그 공간을 구분시켜 준다. 인간은 건축물 중‘집’이라는 공간을 기점으로 그곳에 거주하며 삶을 살아간다. 그래서 집이라는 공간은 인간의 삶과 깊은 관련이 있으며 삶 그 자체로 대변되기도 한다.
본 논문에서, 본인은 건축물이 지어지면 필수적으로 생기는 내부와 외부라는 속성을 집이라는 공간에 적용하여 경계적, 관계적 시점에서 파악하였다. 본인 작품에 일관되게 드러나는 공간의 표현은 집의 외부 이미지이다. 이런 이미지를 ‘투명함’이라는 물성을 바탕으로 표현하고 그 속성으로 인해 내부적 공간과 이미지가 드러나게 된다. 화면 안에 투과되어 보이는 중첩된 내부의 공간과 이미지는 숨겨짐을 전제로 하고, 그로 인해 ‘들여다보는’행위는 관람객들을 작품과 각자의 사유로 인도한다. 그리고 집의 요소 중 창문의 분석을 통해 내부, 외부로 구분되고 연결되는 불가분적인 경계적 속성에 주목한다. 창문 안에 또 다른 공간을 설정하여 관람객에게 능동적 들여다보기를 유발하며 안과 밖, 나아가 작품과 관람객의 상호작용을 통해 교류한다. 이는 관람객에게 각자의 지각 내부에 표상된 풍부한 사유와 상상을 도출해 낸다.
이와 같은 본인 작품의 내용을 선행 작가인 레이첼 화이트리드와 서도호의 작품과 비교 분석하여 연구하였다. 화이트리드는 건물이나 물체의 내·외부를 뒤집거나 경계를 모호하게 만들어 새로운 종류의 환영을 만들어낸다. 이러한 경계적인 시각 특성을 내부를 드러내는 방법론에 초점을 맞추어 연구하였다. 서도호는 반투명한 천을 이용하여 자신이 거주하였던 집을 제작하였다. 관람객은 작품 안의 공간을 체험하며 그 공간 안에서 각자의 기억과 경험을 중첩시킨다. 즉, 공간을 통한 작품과 관람객의 상호작용을 관계적 관점으로 파악하고 본인 작품과 비교 분석하여 연구하였다.
따라서 본 연구의 목적은 집으로 대표되는 공간 연구를 통해 작품 형성 과정에 정당성을 부여하고 작품의 가치와 의미를 구축하는 데에 있다. 또한 작품의 형식적, 내용적 가능성에 대해 살펴봄으로써 작품을 보다 객관적 시각으로 바라보고자 하며 앞으로의 작업 방향에 있어서 더 넓은 시야와 표현 방법의 새로운 접근 방향을 모색하는 것에 논문의 목적이 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Space and human consistently needs each other. Space of a structure generally protects human from external environment and at the same time, divides the space and the external environment. Among different structures, space of ‘house’ is the basis of human beings where they live and lead their lives. Thus, the space of house is deeply associated with human life and it is even represented as the life itself.
In this study, I applied attributes of interior and exterior that are necessarily entailed when a structure is built to the space of house and examined it in a relative and boundary perspective. Expressions of a house’s exterior image are constantly shown in my works. This image is expressed based on the property of ‘transparency’ and with that property, inner space and images come to the surface. Inner space and images overlapped are penetratively seen on screen are with the premise of being hidden and the consequent act of ‘peeking into’ leads every audience to their own thinking. And through analysis on windows among other elements for a house, I focus on its indivisibly attributes of boundary that divides and also connects interior and exterior. Another space is set within the window to let the audience voluntarily look into it and exchange is made further by interaction between the work and the audience. This induces the audience’s profound thinking and imagination symbolized within each one’s perception.
Precedent works of Rachel Whiteread and Doho Seo have been analyzed and compared for this study. Rachel Whiteread makes a new type of vision by turning a building or an object inside out or by obscuring boundaries. I examined this visual feature of boundary with focus on a methodology of how to show the interior. Doho Seo created a house using translucent cloth where he used to live. The audience experiences space within work and overlap their own memories and experiences within that space. Through this, the study intends to find out how works, exhibition hall and the audience interact in a relative perspective and analyzes and compares them with my works.
This study, therefore, aims to give validity to the process of work creation through study on space represented with house and to establish the work’s values and significance. It also aims to see the work more objectively by considering formative and thematical possibilities and to seek a broader view and new approaches of expressions toward my future works.
