This study attempted to investigate the influence of beauty care behavior on semi-permanent makeup purchase intention through consumption values against the rising consumption group of cosmetics ‘Gen MZ’ with a goal of providing basic data needed to promote marketing strategies for semi-permanent makeup products.
For this, a questionnaire survey was performed against men and women born in 1980-2005, living in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, Incheon, Daejeon, Sejong and Chungcheongnam-do and Chungcheongbuk-do from March 10 to April 7, 2023. A total of 604 copies(200: self-administered survey, 404: online survey) were used for final analysis. The collected data were analyzed, using SPSS 28.0, and the results found the followings:
First, concerning subjects’ general characteristics, ‘women(86.4%)’ were higher than ‘men’. In terms of age, educational background and occupation, ‘born in 1980-1985(25.8%)’, ‘college undergraduate/graduate (71.4%)’ and ‘service/sales(25.0%)’ were the highest respectively. When asked if they had a semi-permanent makeup treatment before, ‘Yes’ was mostly responded with 72.2%.
Second, according to factor analysis, beauty care behavior, consumption values and semi-permanent makeup purchase intention were deemed valid with factor loading of 0.4 or higher in all items. According to analysis of Cronbach's alpha for reliability testing, it was higher than the reference value ‘0.6’, confirming the internal consistency of measurement data.
Third, in terms of beauty care behavior, ‘women’ were higher than ‘men’. In terms of beauty care behavior by generation, ‘skin care’ was high in Generation Z while ‘makeup’ and ‘body shaping’ were high in Generation M. When analyzed by marital status, ‘makeup’ was high in ‘single’ while others were high in ‘married’. When analyzed by occupation, ‘body shaping’ was high in ‘profession’ while others were high in ‘service/sales’. When asked if they had a semi-permanent makeup treatment before, ‘Yes’ was high in all categories.
Fourth, in terms of consumption values, women were high in ‘situation’ while men were high in ‘psychology’. In terms of consumption values by generation, ‘appearance attractiveness’ and ‘popularity’ were high in Generation Z. When analyzed by age, consumption values were the highest among those born in 1986-1990. When analyzed by marital status, ‘single’ was higher than ‘married’ in all categories: appearance attractiveness, popularity, function, situation. When analyzed by occupation, ‘service/sales’ was high in ‘appearance attractiveness’, ‘popularity’, ‘psychology’ and ‘function’ while ‘government employee’ was the highest in ‘situation’. When asked if they had a semi-permanent makeup treatment before, ‘Yes’ was higher than ‘No’ in all categories. When analyzed by residence, ‘Seoul’, ‘Gyeonggi-do’ and ‘Incheon’ were high.
Fifth, in terms of semi-permanent makeup purchase intention by gender, generation, age and occupation, ‘women’, ‘Generation M’, ‘born in 1986-1990’ and ‘sole proprietorship’ were high respectively. When asked if they had a semi-permanent makeup treatment before, ‘Yes’ was higher than ‘No’.
Sixth, according to descriptive statistics on correlations among beauty care behavior, consumption values and semi-permanent makeup purchase intention, in beauty care behavior, ‘skin care’ was the highest, followed by ‘hair care’, ‘nail care’, ‘makeup’ and ‘body shaping’. In consumption values, ‘appearance attractiveness’ was the highest, followed by ‘function’, ‘psychology’, ‘popularity’ and ‘situation’. In addition, a positive correlation was observed among beauty care behavior, consumption values and semi-permanent makeup purchase intention.
Seventh, concerning the influence of beauty care behavior on consumption values, a positive effect was observed in ‘hair care’, ‘skin care’ and ‘body shaping’. In the influence of beauty care behavior on semi-permanent makeup purchase intention, a positive effect was found in ‘makeup’, ‘hair care’, ‘nail care’ and ‘body shaping’. In the influence of consumption values on semi-permanent makeup purchase intention, a positive effect was observed in ‘psychology’ and ‘function’. Regarding the mediating effects of consumption values in relationships between beauty care behavior and semi-permanent makeup purchase intention, a partial mediating effect was found in ‘body shaping’ while full mediation was observed in ‘hair care’.
For busy modern people, semi-permanent makeup ensures beauty and convenience. In order for semi-permanent makeup market to grow further, it is required to pay attention to MZers’ consumption trends such as beauty care behavior and consumption values. It is anticipated that there would be more studies on these topics.
