I studied the evolution of the double bass in respect of the structure and features, and arranged the repertoire that might reveal the changing trends naturally.
The Violone started to be transformed into the early double bass during the Baroque Age and the Renaissance Age. Most of the pieces of that period were not written for the instrument at all, but many pieces composed for other instruments were arranged for the double bass. However, the double bass launched its function as a solo instrument and the solo concerti for the instrument appeared during the Classical Age. Owing to the dedication of many composers who made efforts to improve the instrument‘s fullest musical potential, the double bass fell into line of ’melodic instrument‘ during the Romantic Age and the Modern Age. Continuously, many composers have been throwing much light on the bass techniques including Harmonics or Flageolet availing of partial principles.
The double bass is not entirely attained perfect and faultless figure although the instrument has been sustained success up on failure for the past 400 years. There still remains many challenges for the double bass up to now ; to enlarge the deep and low voice which is unique feature of the double bass ; to cultivate its potential as a solo instrument. I hope that my study could call attention of the makers, players and composers to the above fact and the further studies and developmental opinions would be released for the completion of the double bass.
