(Abstract)
As a society is rapidly changed to a knowledge-based industry, the role structure of a family is diversified and the subject of care culture is moved to a community from a traditional family. The population is getting older, and the gap between people with disabilities and without disabilities needs to be narrow for stepping toward a right society. This study investigates some factors affecting job satisfaction of personal assistants employed in the first line of disability services. The study seeks for improvement in rational and effective human resource management and professionality for personal assistants. By means of this investigation, foundations offering high quality services to people with disabilities are suggested. A personal assistance service for disabled people is the service system that personal assistant's job satisfaction is completely transmitted to disabled people.
However, current academic studies focus on research on personal assistance programs rather than the analysis of individual, environmental factors for social workers in charge of personal assistances. This study introduces a theoretical frame of the preceding research which individual job satisfaction has a significant influence on the improvement of job efficiency. Literature reviews along with overseas advanced service cases were carried out.
This study focuses on how different the job satisfaction is with respect to individual characteristics of personal assistants for disabled people as well as job and organization characteristics, what factors are related to the job satisfaction as the assistant, and how they work.
For this study, factors affecting the job satisfaction of personal assistants for disabled people were classified as population sociological feature, job characteristic, organization characteristic, and individual characteristic. Eight organizations, each one in eight districts among personal assistance services-supporting organizations located in Daegu city, were selected. Structured survey was performed to 240 personal assistants and 161 questionnaires returned were finally analyzed.
Survey was carried out from 1 September 2009 to 5 October 2009. For the purpose of analyzing corrected data, frequency analysis, t-test, one way-ANOVA, correlation analysis, and regression analysis were conducted with SPSS WIN 12.0. The following three remarkable findings are obtained in results.
First, personal assistants are those who do not complete professional education and are lack of professionality. It is also found that single women in the late forties or early fifties have advantages working as a personal assistant.
Second, the personal assistant is not an attractive position for people with high household expenses. This means that a reasonable salary has not been paid from the viewpoint of practical job satisfaction, and a low salary leads to non-professionality for personal assistants.
Finally, according to the analysis of job satisfaction, it is clearly found out that a personal assistant for disabled people is a professional position. Nevertheless, it is exceptional in South Korea.
Personal assistants for disabled people should do their jobs with recognizing the importance of the job which affects disabled people's life and household activity service. Provided that self-growth for showing self-leadership is developed, service quality will be improved. In addition, it is necessary to prepare programs that educate several requirements needed in all activity areas as an essential factor.
On the basis of these results, six suggestions can be apparently made. The first suggestion is to achieve a countermeasure for personal assistant's life. The second one is to improve personal assistant's professionality. The third one is systematic management for personal assistants. The fourth one is a job made up of best personal assistants and the fifth one is the registration of social insurances. The final one is combination among execution organizations, disabled people using the service, and personal assistants offering the service directly.
