Writing is a fundamental skill that allows us to communicate with others, and it has been a main institutional goal from the beginning of the school education. Many students fail to acquire the writing ability, and most of them have been left without additional cares for their improvement in schools.
Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) instruction is one of writing instructional models for the children who have writing difficulties. SRSD is a flexible instructional model used to teach writing strategies and self regulation procedures including goal setting, self-instructions, self-monitoring, self-evaluation, and self-reinforcement. This model has been reported as a tool to enhance writing ability of students.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of SRSD on the writing ability of children with writing disabilities. Three fourth grade students identified with writing disabilities participated in the present study, which was conducted for 10 weeks. A multiple probe baseline design across the participants was employed, and the data were collected by baseline, intervention, generalization, and maintenance. During the baseline phase, each participant wrote without instructions and reinforcement. Each child individually was instructed for the self-regulation procedures and learned a story writing strategy during the intervention phase. Generalization was administered by diary written by the participants, and the maintenance was administered one week after the intervention phase to assess if the effects of the intervention maintains. The changes in the use of self-regulated strategies and self-efficacy were analyzed before and after the SRSD instruction.
The results obtained from the study are as follows.
First, the stories written by the participants were improved qualitatively and became much longer.
Second, the amount of writing time and the use of self-regulated strategies increased.
Third, writing self-efficacy of the participants were improved.
Fourth, the improved quality was generalized and the improved the length of
writing was partially generalized to diary.
Fifth, the improved quality, writing time were maintained, and the length of
writing was partially maintained.
The results above indicated that SRSD had a positive impact on participants' writing ability, and the improved writing ability was partially generalized and maintained. In the future research, it is necessary to examine the effects of SRSD on the correctness of writing.
