The utilization of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites offers significant economic and social benefits due to their advantages, including high-resolution Earth observation capability, rapid communication speed, and relatively low orbital cost. Consequently, LEO has become a major focus of modern space development. However, the LEO environment exposes materials to extreme conditions, such as ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, atomic oxygen (AO) surface impact, thermal cycling, and high vacuum, which collectively cause severe material degradation. To predict such damage and evaluate materials resistant to AO erosion and UV radiation, extensive experimental and simulation studies have been conducted. In this study, a multiscale simulation framework is proposed to bridge molecular-scale bond dissociation mechanisms with macroscopic erosion behavior. To extend nanoscale analyses to the continuum scale, time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT), reactive molecular dynamics (ReaxFF), and finite element analysis (FEA) were integrated. Through ReaxFF simulations under an NVT ensemble, a consistent methodology for calculating AO erosion rates was established, thereby deriving temperature-dependent erosion relationships and observed phase transitions. TD-DFT calculations identified the excitation states of epoxy constituents, and Franck–Condon analysis provided vibronic transition energies, which were used to distribute excitation energy in ReaxFF simulations to describe UV-induced bond dissociation and crosslink degradation. The resulting degradation kinetics were calibrated with FT-IR experimental data and reformulated using the Beer–Lambert law, linking molecular-level reactions to a continuum-scale degradation model. The derived degradation models were then coupled with the FE-based erosion analysis. As a result, the computed erosion yields for epoxy and Kapton exhibited ratios consistent with experimental findings, demonstrating the validity of the proposed framework. This methodology is expected to be further extended to predict the evolution of mechanical properties and to establish a comprehensive material database by applying the framework to diverse polymeric systems. Furthermore, the framework possesses the versatility to be expanded for analyzing material behaviors under various orbital conditions, providing a robust platform for next-generation space material development.
