Soswaewon, which is one of the representative gardens of Joseon period, is an outstanding cultural heritage and called the best of Honam cultural heritages. It has inherited scholarship for such a long time.
So far, studies on Soswaewon have focused on externals of Soswaewon, but there is no studies on 『Soswaewon sasil』that can be used as basic data for extensive study. This study is to analyze 『 Soswaewon sasil』as exact identification of basic data is considered helpful for extensive and expansive studies.
Chapter Ⅱ is to speculate what 『Soswaewon sasil』 is, what composition it has and properties of its organization.
Chapter Ⅲ classifies the formative process of Soswaewon Poetical Circle into three periods. Sosweawon, which is a garden, consistently changes because it is a living creature. For a study on the early period of its construction, this study speculates the formative process of poetical circles focusing on Yang San-bo who provided a good place for association for Honam scholars as an owner of Soswaewon and Yang Ja-jing. It also speculates Yang San-bo's management of Soswaewon, his literature, and his friends. The people who formed the initial poetical circle were the elites who led the Honam poetical circle and completed the scholar literature. They travelled pavilions, producing lots of hanging boards and tablets on which their words are inscribed. Their poetry have natural inclination like the flow of literature at that time. Most of the natural poetry dealt with real sceneries. This study selects poems by a few scholars to speculate their world of poetry and characteristics of the Soswaewon Poetical Circle.
For a study on the poetical circle of the middle period, it is involved with poetic association focusing on Yang Cheon-wun. This study is to speculate what changes Soswaewon had and has maintained its identity through Jeongyujaeran. The poetry of this period dealt with friendship unlike the initial poetry which dealt with naturalism.
In respect to the poetry of the late period, this study focuses on Yang Jin-tae and Yang Gyeong-ji who were the 5th and 6th owners of Soswaewon, and their associations with friends for poetry. Here, this study is to identify what influences Soswaewon poetry circle had in the early period of historical change and how its identity has been maintained. This study is to confirm that there was no energy on poetry as the initial Soswaewon poetry circle, but it was regionally expanded at this time.
Chapter Ⅳ is to examine change in external structures of Soswaewon. It is thought that Soswaewon was gradually changed because of several battles or changed standpoints of construction. So, this chapter is to speculate compositions of the early, middle and late periods of Soswaewon respectively, along with characteristics of Soswaewon.
For the early period, a focus is given on a motive of taking care of this garden and planners who helped the construction of this garden. Yang Ja-jing is considered in respect to the early period because his friends were also those of the others and he had social circumstance similar to the others.
The characteristic of the middle period is involved with the process Yang Cheon-wun, the 3rd owner, rebuilt Soswaewon. Through comparison with that of the early period, this study is to identify additional compositions and considers the philosophies of owners are applied for the garden. In respect to the late period, this study is to identify external expansion of the view with space of Sosweawon confined through the <Soswaewon Do> and the <30 Poems>.
Finally, this study is to examine literary meaning and its value as a heritage of the 『Soswaewon sasil』 and to confirm that the word circle of Soswaewon made a great contribution to literature at that time. And it is to examine that Soswaewon greatly influenced mentality of next generations through elegant scholarship as well as it is a birthplace of garden literature.
