부성 실천을 통해 본 ‘돌보는 남성성’의 가능성 : 중간 계층 아버지들의 경험을 중심으로 = The Possibility of Caring Masculinities in the Practice of Fatherhood : Focusing on Fathers in the Middle Class

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 오늘날 한국 사회의 아버지들에게 요구되는 다양한 역할변화에 주목하여, 그 중에서도 특히 노동자 및 양육자로서 남성들이 부성 정체성을 형성하는 과정에서 어떤 갈등과 적응의 과정을 거치는지, 그리고 이를 바탕으로 구성하는 남성성은 성 평등의 관점에서 어떻게 해석 가능한지 분석하려는 목적을 가진다. 이에 자녀 양육에 적극적인 30~40대 아버지들을 대상으로 심층면접을 수행하였으며, 아버지들의 생애 전반에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 부성 실천 과정에서의 긴장을 드러내고 ‘돌보는 남성성’의 가능성과 한계를 논의하였다. 처음 아버지가 된 남성들은 출산하지 않은 몸이라는 제 3자적 위치를 자각하고, 자녀와의 유대감 형성을 위해 더 많은 노력과 시간이 소요됨을 체득하게 된다. 또한 아버지들은 ‘새로운 아버지’ 담론을 접하면서도 경제적 부양자 역할을 중심으로 부모로서의 책임감을 수용하는 한계를 지닌다. 그러나 현실적 제약 속에서도 아버지들은 친밀한 가족관계에 대한 기대와 요구를 충족시키고자 자녀와의 신체적 심리적 거리를 좁히기 위해 노력하며, 배우자와 협력적인 부모노릇을 수행하면서 제한적으로나마 관계지향성, 상호의존성과 같은 돌봄 가치를 재현한다는 점에서 ‘돌보는 남성성’의 가능성을 보여준다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to focus on the differentiated roles of fathers in current Korean society, investigate the process of conflict and adaptation that fathers do fathering as a worker and carer, and analyze their masculinity with a gender perspective. With the in-depth interviews to fathers in 30-40s who care for their child(ren) actively, this study aims to reveal the tension arising from fathering and explain the possibilities and limitations of caring masculinities. At first, fathers come to realize their status as a third party due to the physical distance, and then find the necessity of effort and time for developing the bond between the child(ren) and themselves. In addition, fathers have a tendency to accept the parental responsibilities mainly with the breadwinner role, even though they encounter ‘New Father’ discourse. Nowadays, however, fathers try to fill up the gap between their child(ren) and themselves physically and emotionally, and also embrace the care value such as relationship or interdependency by co-parenting with their partner even though it is incomplete. Despite the limitations inherent in fathers’ parenting, the reflexive attitude of caring fathers raises the expectations for the possibility of caring masculinities.
