This work was carried out to find out the pollution cause of water quality and to establish the appropriate strategies through the periodic sampling and operation data analysis before the inflow of Gongsan dam as well as inside area, and the following conclusions could be drawn. The restaurants and villages are scattered along the upper stream of the Gongsan dam and they are generating pollutants which can be properly controlled by the establishment of point source strategies, which the diffuse pollution from the stormwater of small farmlands, orchards, golf courses and forests is affecting the water quality of the Gongsan dam used as drinking water source. Before being non-point sources inflowed into the dam as the preparatory strategy, it is recommended to establish the structural best management practices such as the installation of pre-dam, pond or mechanical devices as well as education and public relations for the neighboring people. From the point of view of water quality criteria, the Gongsan dam was judeged as the 3rd grade and indicated the inappropriate to the drinking water sources in the emergency case.
The BOD/COD ratio for the stream water and the inside dam were 3 to 5 and 3 to 7, respectively, which showed that the refractory organic matters from the fallen leaves and sediments were gradually generated prior to the inflow of lake and inside dam area. In order to investigate the detailed clause clearly, the long-term investigation of sediments and the characteristics of run-off from stormwater could be suggested. In spite of being judged as appropriate for the criteria of drinking water, the water quality of Gongsan dam can be judged as inappropriate in the case of TN and COD/BOD ratio in considering the criteria of lake. Particularly, the refractory organic matters should be controlled prior to being intaked as drinking water sources, the employment of the advanced water treatment process such as ozone and activated carbon as well as the examination of the already established water treatment plant are strongly recommended.
