This research aims to develop a social skill training program for ADHD children with emotional and behavioral disorders and subsequenlty to evaluate the program's effect. The program is designed to subdue ADHD symptoms and to strengthen patients' social skills by employing the six training steps of interpersonal skill, self-related behavior skill, academic-related behavior skill, assertive behavior skill, communication skill, and peer acceptance skill development.
The sample data is based on ADHD children between the age of 8 to 10, who live in Seoul, who have been diagnosed as ADHD patients with both emotional and behavioral disorders, and currently undergoing medication treatments. The treatment and control group are each comprised of 7 patients, amounting to 14 subjects in total. For pre and post treatment measurements, this study applied the techniques of Abbreviated Conners Parent-Teach Rating Scale-Revised (ACRS) and Social Skills Rating System (SSRS). For treatment, the study applied 12 sessions of the devised training program, each session lasting 40 minutes.
The outcome of the research shows that the treatment group has lower levels of both hyperactivity and condcut problem than the control group. Moreover, the treatment group's skill level on cooperation, self-assertivness, responsibility, and self-control all improved more than that of its counterpart. All these findings were statistically significant.
From the results obtained so far, this study identified a strong indication and utility that the devised program of soical skill training has a causal effect of reducing ADHD symptoms and improving certain social skills.
