The object of this study is to verify the effect of bedtime storybook reading on story construction ability of children and to suggest a method for making efficient use of bedtime storybook reading to develop this ability.
As a result of study on related records and preceding investigation, the hypothesis is as follows;
Hypothesis 1) the length of stories made up by a test group which did bedtime storybook reading will be longer than that by a control group which didn't.
Hypothesis 2) the quality of stories made up by a test group which did bedtime storybook reading will be higher than that by a control group which didn't.
Hypothesis 3) the level of stories made up by a test group which did bedtime storybook reading will be higher than that by a control group which didn't.
The subjects of this study are 52 four-year-old children of G preschool in Daegu, divided into a test group and a control group composed of 26 children each considering ages (months). The procedure of the experiment was advanced in order of a preliminary test, education for parents of a test group, pre-test, bedtime storybook reading for 7 weeks (test group) and post-test.
The test for story construction ability of children before and after the experiment was carried out to verify the effect of the experiment and ANCOVA was carried out by SPSS/PC+ dealing with pre-test and post-test marks of the test group and the control group.
The result of this study is as follows;
First, the length of stories made up by a test group which did bedtime storybook reading is longer than that by a control group which didn't.
Second, the quality of stories made up by a test group which did bedtime storybook reading is higher than that by a control group which didn't.
Third, the level of stories made up by a test group which did bedtime storybook reading is higher than that by a control group which didn't.
The conclusion from the result of this study is as follows;
First, there was a statistically significant difference in the length between the stories made up by a test group which did bedtime storybook reading every day and that by a control group which didn't. Therefore, it is suggested that bedtime storybook reading every day is needed for an increase in the quantity of stories made up by children.
Second, there was a statistically significant difference in the quality between the stories made up by a test group which did bedtime storybook reading every day and that by a control group which didn't.
Third, there was a statistically significant difference in the level between the stories made up by a test group which did bedtime storybook reading every day and that by a control group which didn't.
From this result, it is suggested that bedtime storybook reading is effective as a method of reaching a little higher level of the stories made by children.
